The Atlantic Slave Trade: A Census, by Philip D. Curtin

Curtin combines modern research and statistical methods with his broad knowledge of the field to present the first book-length quantitative analysis of the Atlantic slave trade. Its basic evidence suggests revision of currently held opinions concerning the place of the slave trade in the economies of the Old World nations and their American colonies.

“Curtin’s work will not only be the starting point for all future research on the slave trade and comparative slavery, but will become an indispensable reference for anyone interested in Afro-American studies.”—Journal of American History

“Curtin has produced a stimulating monograph, the product of immaculate scholarship, against which all past and future studies will have to be judged.”—Journal of American Studies

“Professor Curtin’s new book is up to his customary standard of performance: within the limits he set for himself, The Atlantic Slave Trade could hardly be a better or more important book.”—American Historical Review

Overall, I liked this book.
By cindizaradich@hotmail.com
There are many aspects to the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. There is the issue of the African disporia, where many Africans were taken from their homes to another completely different country. There are the moral issues about slavery and who was involved and to what extent. Also, there are the horrors of the middle passage and the life of the slaves after they reached their destination. In the book The Atlantic Slave Trade: A Census, published by the The University of Wisconsin Press in 1969, the author Philip D. Curtin focuses on the number of slaves that were taken across the Atlantic. Throughout the book the author uses different research methods to express how many Africans were shipped across the Atlantic, from what parts in Africa, and the destination where they were shipped. He uses other historians' estimates and either tries to prove them correct or prove them incorrect. The author's intent on writing this book was to explore old knowledge on the slave trade and not to present new information. His intent was to use old data and publications and come up with his own theories or "synthesis". He does this by using documents and estimations that have already been written. With this information he then tries to correlate them with previous documentation to prove or disprove them. Also, he states that his numbers are not precise and should not be considered exact but only estimations. He did not intend the book to be a definitive study, but a challenge to others, who can, to correct or complete his findings. He also knew that in time with new data and more sophisticated forms of calculation his work might be modified. Another area he did not want to discuss was the morality of the slave trade. This book was not intended to blame any one person or country nor did it discuss the evils of the slave trade. He felt these aspects of the trade have already been proven and in his opinion is no longer disputed. I felt the author did an adequate job presenting and explaining the material. He discusses in detail where he found the information, the name of the historian who first presented the information, and how he proved or disproved the information. He did a great deal of research in finding accurate information and when there was none given he explains how he came to his conclusions and the methods in which he used. However, I would recommend taking a statistics class before reading this book. It goes in depth with various methods and a great deal of numbers. This can be quite confusing at times. It also warrants the reader to re-read certain areas of the book. However, this was his intention because he wanted his readers to think about what he has written and possibly challenge it. The organization of the chapters are in a manner in which the reader can first review some of the previous literature about the numbers of Africans shipped during the slave trade. The first chapter also examines the major players and when they were involved. The other chapters are organized by certain areas or by centuries. The centuries are in chronological order so that the reader does not go from one century to the next back to the previous. It is easier to follow this way. The second to last chapter is a summery and also explains the major trends within the slave trade. It explains when it was at its peak and when it started to diminish. The final chapter was about European mortality and how many European sailors died while involved in the trade. This chapter really did not fit in with the other chapters and would have been better left out. Also the author uses various techniques in which to prove his calculations and assumptions. Though they are only estimations they give the reader a sense of credibility. At times he uses several historians' estimates and compares them to each other. Sometimes they are similar, but when they are not he explains both of their theories and where they could have been incorrect. This gives the reader the ability to either agree or disagree with his assumptions. After he discusses all the inaccuracies then he explains his own theories and backs them up by population records, shipping records, or other data that was documented during the time period. This also adds to the author's credibility. At other times when he can not find any information due to loss or some other reason, he then uses information from other areas and correlates them with the area he's discussing. He then uses this information to estimate the numbers of slaves imported. Overall, the author does a good job of discussing his intentions. His work is well researched and highly credible. However, his methods and overwhelming amount of numbers may confuse the average reader. In this case a reader may want to choose to read about a different aspect of the Atlantic slave trade.

Landmark on the Slave Trade & Atlantic History
By Chimonsho
As the first systematic study of the Atlantic slave trade based on thorough examination of manuscript sources, "TAST" deserves 5 stars. Its importance in providing reliable statistics, and influence in spurring later research, ensures its permanent value. Unlike Curtin's other books, e.g. "Rise of the Plantation Complex", this is a close (not narrow), focused counting exercise rather than a broad socioeconomic study at which he excelled. Subsequent scholarship has inevitably revised some findings, primarily by raising the number of Africans. "TAST" concludes that approximately 9,500,000 slaves were transported. The currently accepted number is probably 12,00,000+, likely rising further as more evidence is tapped. But Curtin welcomed revisions; his enduring contribution is a method also employed by successors. Paul Lovejoy's 1982 and 1989 articles in the Journal of African History trace the course of upward revision, and his "Transformations in Slavery" contains necessary context. D. Eltis et al, "The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade: A Database on CD-ROM" presents the current figures, and is a great boon to scholars. Curtin helped pioneer "tropical" history and Atlantic studies, but Atlantic history has moved on from the framework he devised. Now this book might better be titled "The African Atlantic Slave Trade." This odious commerce also entrapped non-Africans: Amerindians were sold within the Americas and to the West Indies, and convicts and indentured servants exiled from Europe (especially Britain) were also human chattel in the Atlantic system. Curtin's work, including training dozens of skilled historians such as Lovejoy, significantly advanced understanding and debate on this topic, and the world owes him a debt of gratitude.

Human Heart, Cosmic Heart: A Doctor's Quest to Understand, Treat, and Prevent Cardiovascular Disease, by Dr. Thomas Cowan

While serving with the Peace Corps in Swaziland, Thomas Cowan encountered the work of Rudolf Steiner and Weston A. Price - two men whose ideas would fascinate and challenge him for decades to come. Both drawn to the art of healing and repelled by the way medicine was-and continues to be-practiced in the United States, Cowan returned from Swaziland, went to medical school, and established a practice. He remained intrigued by the work of Price and Steiner and, in particular, with Steiner's provocative claim that the heart is not a pump. Dr. Cowan believes that Steiner was correct that the heart is not a pump, and our understanding of heart disease is completely wrong. And this gross misunderstanding is the reason heart disease remains the most common cause of death worldwide.

Review

"There’s only a few books a year that I think really deserve to be in everyone’s library. This is one of them. . . . It’s loaded with great information, and it can save your life or the life of someone you love.”--Dr. Joseph Mercola, founder and director, mercola.com

Foreword Reviews-

"Heart disease is a national crisis, and the most common treatments don’t lower the risk of death in most cases. Rather than despair, Thomas Cowan meets these devastating realities with the firm belief that there must be another solution. Through many years of research and medical practice, he challenges the common notion of what the heart is for―to pump blood. Through observation, geometry, and scientific insight, he proposes that the heart is a hydraulic ram rather than pump because it uses suction rather than force to build the momentum of the blood. And he makes it clear that this change of perspective makes all the difference by exploring heart attacks, what they aren’t and what they are. The treatment Cowan advises in Human Heart, Cosmic Heart is personal and holistic (whole-body remedies), driven by the patient’s own life story in order to show the whole of the nervous system. The result is a refreshingly balanced approach focused on responding to the needs of the body rather than reacting to the problem experienced in the heart. Throughout the book, Cowan shares his personal journey of learning, making the book approachable and warm as well as logical and authoritative. By sharing his learning process, he conveys a deep understanding of the cardiovascular system and its needs. Cowan, a self-proclaimed doubter and nonconformist, brings a voice of skepticism and hope into a genre packed with dry, black-and-white thinking. His insights are relentlessly rooted in research, and he explains medical science in an accessible way, including clear diagrams and step-by-step explanations that move at just the right pace for educated adults without moving too slowly for medical professionals. This book is life-changing for those trying to understand their own bodies, or those of loved ones, and it’s truly transformative in the hands of medical professionals, especially young doctors.”

“This book blew my mind. I will admit . . . I thought I was simply going to be reading an interesting memoir of a good physician. Instead, I discovered the most groundbreaking, unorthodox, outside-the-box treatise on the heart I have ever stumbled upon. If you have a heart and you want to live a long time, you must, must read this book.”--Ben Greenfield, author of the New York Times bestseller, Beyond Training; founder and owner, Greenfield Fitness Systems; www.bengreenfieldfitness.com

“What happens when the medical profession views the heart as a mechanical pump? We get ghoulish surgeries, medications with horrible side effects, and soulless low-fat diets. Tom Cowan asks us to look anew at the heart; first step is the demonstration that the blood pumps the heart, not vice versa. From this observation comes a way of treating heart disease that is more effective, more gentle, more felicitate than conventional protocol. Part biography, part wisdom, part practical advice, Human Heart, Cosmic Heart will change the way you look at the process of healing and the miraculous world of the human body.”--Sally Fallon Morell, President, The Weston A. Price Foundation

illuminating and inspiring
By Timothy D. Lundeen
Dr Cowan interleaves stories of his life with what he's learned about health, healing, and the heart. His stories take us with him on his journey, from childhood experiences with tachycardia and heart irregularities, through his stint in the Peace Corp, the surprising and transformative experience of discovering the works of both Weston Price and Rudolph Steiner while living in Africa, his experience with anthroposophical medicine, and his continual search for how to help people truly heal (instead of just treating symptoms).

I’ve been working on my own health for years now, and have come to many of the same conclusions as Dr Cowan. I expect his prescription for a healthy diet and lifestyle will help the people who follow it, as I’ve seen the results first-hand.

But I also found much that was new to me, from an exploration of how the structure of the heart is shaped by its function, ideas about how the heart really works and integrates with blood transport, a description of the mechanics of heart attacks that is very different from mainstream concepts, but which makes total sense and fits with everything else I’ve learned. The book speaks to more than the mechanics of how our bodies work, also talking about our spiritual nature and our connections to other people and the nature that surrounds us. The book leads naturally to more questions, and new paths to explore, and I am much indebted for these signposts!

Highly recommended.

More a memoir than a manual. Needs more substance.
By Kyle William
I decided to purchased Human Heart, Cosmic Heart after hearing Dr. Cowan on one of my favorite podcasts. After blazing through a relatively short read, this book comes up empty on many fronts, confusing itself as a pseudo memoir over informative pulp.

As someone that suffers from high cholesterol and a family history of heart disease, I was exited to read this as I've always been a fan of alternative thinking when it comes to medicine (I use the word alternative not so much as a replacement for homeopathic, but in a sense that more "modern" treatment thinking tends to be more effective). Unfortunately, I felt the ~120 pages of this book came up empty.

What I loved about this book:
-Dr. Coawn's thoughts on hydrophilic tubes and how the heart isn't a pump is fascinating. Truly cutting edge thinking and I hope that more research is dedicated towards the idea that our circulatory system is really a series of hydrophilic tubes.

-The book is a short, easy read.

What I didn't like about this book:
-The book never really figures out what it is trying to accomplish. It can be a memoir at times, it can branch out into extraordinarily philosophical exploration, and finally it can be, albeit brief, a manual for healthy living. Outside of one single supplement and one single alternative treatment method, there is no real plan on fixing a diseased or broken heart.

-Dr. Cowan sometimes goes...really...really...far out in his thinking. There are whole chapters dedicated to the fact that we should think of the earth in geocentric terms instead of the almost universally accepted understanding that the sun is the center of our solar system. The author also spends a chapter trying understand gold and the human obsessions associated with it. These feel like utter distractions from whatever lost thesis Dr. Cowan is trying to explore and unfortunately consume the latter half of the book.

-The book, in my opinion, completely lacks a "so what." There really isn't a conclusion and Dr. Cowan spends the final chapter contemplating why heart transplant recipients often receive the feelings of their deceased donors. This is interesting, but the author spends no time trying to scientifically explain what his thought process is, which is what it felt like throughout most of the book.

Don't get me wrong, listening to Dr. Cowan on the podcast convinced me he is a deeply intelligent doctor. Unfortunately, his thoughts are completely unorganized in this text and perhaps could have used a better editor.

DO NOT buy this book if you're looking for a guide/manual/instruction on a sick or diseased heart. You'll find yourself just as confused as I am trying to understand why you just read about the geographic and acute angles of the heart as an organ, why there are poor people in the world, and how the author's lifelong curiosity with gold will somehow heal or abate your ailments.

Genders in Production: Making Workers in Mexico's Global Factories, by Leslie Salzinger

In this engrossing and original book, Leslie Salzinger takes us with her into the gendered world of Mexico's global factories. Her careful ethnographic work, personal voice, and sophisticated analysis capture the feel of life inside the maquiladoras and make a compelling case that transnational production is a gendered process. The research grounds contemporary feminist theory in an examination of daily practices and provides an important new perspective on globalization.

Review
"This is a book Border Studies has been waiting for--a pathbreaking study of the gendered meanings and identities at work in the transnational assembly plants that dominate the social landscape of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.... It will surely become a classic in the field."

"Through case studies of employment and management in four different factories, Salzinger beautifully demonstrates the variability, and flexibility of concepts of masculinity and femininity, the fact that they are context-dependent performative behaviors. The ethnographically based empirical data, as well as the sophisticated mastery of theory, make this book an unusually rich contribution to the fields of international labor and gender studies."

"[Salzinger] launches a new phase in the study of women employed in offshore production, with significant implications for women in factories generally."

Salzinger brilliantly traces the specificities, variability, and contingencies in the emergence of gendered subjects across different production environments, moving from femininity as attribute to femininity as generative. The exploitation of gender for profit
By Malvin
"Genders in Production" by Leslie Salzinger is a groundbreaking study about production processes in Mexico's maquiladoras. This fascinating book should appeal to academics, feminists, labor activists and others who may be interested in learning about the dynamic processes by which globalization exploits gender for profit. Importantly, Ms. Salzinger's keen insight and analysis helps open the door to imagining a world where gender stereotypes could be transcended and labor rights accorded more respect.

Ms. Salzinger's meticulous ethnographic work at four maquila factories helps her obtain an insider's view of how sexual identities struggle for recognition and reward on the shop floor. The author discusses how the "trope of feminity" deludes investors into locating factories in places where it is believed that female laborers will passively accept routinized work for low wages. However, as the facts on the ground depart from this fantasy, the struggle between capital and labor is observed to be gendered but nonetheless highly variable and contextual.

Ms. Salzinger dedicates one chapter apiece to her experiences at four manufacturing plants in northern Mexico. She cleverly assigns pseudonyms to describe the salient characteristics of each plant. For example, "Andromex" is a factory where male and female workers become almost androgenous through the development of similar work habits; "Anarchomex" is noteworthy for its embattled masculine workers conflicting both amongst themselves and with female co-workers to create nearly anarchic conditions of production; and so on. The writing in these chapters is vivid, engaging and intelligent, imparting glimpses into both the worker's daily struggle for survival and the logic of the managerial systems that controls and exploits these workers.

I found it interesting (if not disheartening) to learn that capital's strategy of dividing the working class by gender has proven to be remarkably effective. By redefining production as primarily women's work, employers can pay below-subsistance wages and offer scant benefits, job enrichment or advancement opportunities. As made clear through Ms. Salzinger's field research, these diminished career expectations deprive the working class of Mexico with the hope of achieving a better life and are frequently used as a threat to drive down wages in the U.S. and other industrialized nations.

In the final chapter, Ms. Salzinger draws on feminist writings to connect the trope of feminity with cultural norms that tend to devalue women through their association with domesticity. By discovering that gendered meanings in the workplace can be flexible, however, the author suggests that subjectivity may be contestable. If structures of power are a "concatenation of common-sense understandings" about women's perceived role in the home, she argues, then the reality of changed meanings forged in the crucible of workplace production may point the way in time to new, empowered definitions.

I highly recommend this book to demanding readers who may be interested in an original and thought-provoking thesis about gender and globalization.

God Save the King!
By Joseph Boone
The Scarlet Pimpernel is a classic novel, though it is hard to categorize. It is part romance, part adventure, part spy thriller, and part superhero fiction. All of these elements went into the pot and the resulting stew is extremely entertaining.

The book follows the adventures of Sir Percy Blakeney as he seeks to help French aristocrats escape the guillotine during the French Revolution. Since official English policy forbids this, Blakeney adopts a masked identity as the Scarlet Pimpernel to remain anonymous. The French, of course, detest this interference in their affairs and set out to trap and kill the Pimpernel at all costs. As part of his effort to deflect suspicion from himself, he plays the fool in every day life and he does it well. His own wife considers him a useless fop... and that's where the story really gets interesting.

I won't give away more of the plot, but she ends up following him into danger in an attempt to save him. This allows the most suspenseful section of the book to be told from Mrs. Blakeney's perspective. Her terror for her husband's fate is pure and adds to the tension considerably. If we saw it through the Pimpernel's eyes, it would doubtless be far more composed and nowhere near as suspenseful.

In closing, The Scarlet Pimpernel is well worth buying. It's laugh out loud funny, suspenseful, romantic, and generally quite a page-turner.

Orczy has woven a stirring French Revolution-era tale.
By A Customer
I picked up this book when I was fourteen and have read it numerous times since. Orczy's dramatic writing fully captures the drama and the tragedy of the French Revolution. This novel has something for everyone: political intrigue, adventure and romance. I particularly appreciate the development of her three main characters. They live lives that require superhuman intellect and courage. All of them find themselves searching for something: whether it be love, power or heroic fulfillment. Orczy has a true talent for writing. She envelopes her plot with dramatic dressing. One can see this by reading the novel's first sentence: "The seething, surging, mumuring crowd of people, human only in name..." If you enjoy this book, I recommend you read her other titles in the series. Most are not in print, but usually libraries have some or most of the hard to get titles. My other favorite novel in the series is The Triumph of the Scarlet Pimpernel. It carries the same premise as the first book but incorporates more edge-of-your seat excitement.

Percy does it again
By A. J. Denton
A spunky young Parisian named Josette must find a way to help her best friend, a young mother whose husband has been murdered by the CGS, get out of France. She barters for their passage to England with some incriminating letters that the CGS is desperate to get ahold of. But when the plan falls apart and Josette herself is facing the guillotine, The Scarlet Pimpernel must spirit her away from the jaws of death. This is a well-crafted tale of intrigue, murder and romance. Percy is in top form battling Chauvelin and his goons. Chauvelin is particularly bloodthirsty in this one!

Review
The most pleasing thing is the fresh way it presents its subject. The artwork is beautiful throughout, the simple infographics and visual information forming an excellent companion to the subject matter. It crowns an effective and engaging approach to the subject. (Elite Business, June 2013) This book provides fantastic guidance on how to develop an innovation culture within your business; to keep staff thinking of new ways to improve your offering and refine what made you successful in the first place. (Start Your Business, October 2013)

From the Back Cover

Innovate your way to meaningful and sustainable growth

Most scientists agree that we live in one of the greatest times of change in the history of our species. And yet the pace of change is actually increasing...

For many firms, this means innovation isn't optional, it's imperative. Customers demand it. Competitors will outflank you if you don't achieve it. Talented employees won't join your firm if you don't deliver it. Analysts expect it. Investors reward it. And yet most people still believe in primitive myths about innovation: "It's only about new products and new technology"; "It's about rare strokes of inspired genius"; "There's no disciplined, consistent method"; etc. These common assumptions are not true.

Based on over three decades of path-breaking work on innovation effectiveness, Ten Types of Innovation will help you and your teams know what to do when the stakes are high, time is short, and you really need to build a breakthrough. The solution is to look beyond new products to nine other powerful types of innovation, which can be combined for competitive advantage. The book lays out fresh ways to think, and then explains the actions that allow teams or firms to innovate reliably and repeatedly.

Written for entrepreneurs, executives, and innovators on the front line in virtually any industry, anyone who wants to move beyond the folklore and get innovation to really work will find the tradecraft revealed here to be indispensable.

" Ten Types of Innovation is a must-read for any manager seriously interested in building an innovation culture rather than waiting around hoping for the next immaculate conception."
Roger L. Martin, Dean, Rotman School of Management

"This book provides great frameworks to help you rethink the role innovation plays in your business. It will raise the quality of innovation dialogue from a black art to a serious science."
Ralph Jerome, VP of Corporate Innovation, Mars, Inc.

" Ten Types of Innovation will become the indispensable 'how to do it' textbook of disruptive innovation, providing an executable roadmap for transformative change in any industry."
Dr. Nicholas F. LaRusso, Medical Director, Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation

"This book distills three decades of innovation research into an action-oriented framework, offering a comprehensive map to guide creative teams as they venture into challenging new territory."
Dipak C. Jain, Dean, INSEAD

" Ten Types of Innovation provides the insights necessary to get you started on your innovation journey."
Curt Nonomaque, President and CEO, VHA

A good book that goes beyond the distinction between product and process innovation
By Jackal
CONTENT
This is a good attempt to provide a classification of innovations. Very few books try to go beyond the distinction between product and process innovation, sometimes also including service innovation. This book lists a full ten ideal types of innovation. Actual innovations typically draw on a couple of the ideal types. This is a nice perspective, which can open the horizon for people engaged in innovation. People with a particular functional background often miss out on other types of innovation.

I would say the focus is the management of innovation so the key audience is business-oriented people; either higher level executives or innovation project managers that are closer to the commercial side. Still you should consider this mainly an innovation book and not a strategy book. Having said this, some of the innovation types are closer to strategy. Those sections of the book has a lot in common with All the Right Moves: A Guide to Crafting Breakthrough Strategy and Profit Patterns: 30 Ways to Anticipate and Profit from Strategic Forces Reshaping Your Business.

The book does not deal with the process of coming up with an innovation (teams, creativity, culture, decentralised organisation, skunk-works, etc.). For more practical tools you have the companion (authors seem affiliated) book 101 Design Methods: A Structured Approach for Driving Innovation in Your Organization, even though that book is not at all a very good book.

The book is based on ideas from a consulting company called Doblin in Chicago. Some ten years ago I read that the book would be published. I do not know what happened, but at the very least the book is not a rushed job to make a quick buck. Still books don't improve after such a long gestation period.

ALL THE LINKS TO REFERENCES IN THE BOOK ARE ALREADY BROKEN. THE CONSULTING COMPANY BEHIND THE BOOK WENT BANKRUPT SO MAYBE ONE SHOULD TREAT ITS IDEAS WITH CAUTION. NO ATTENTION TO DETAIL. HOW CAN LINKS BE BROKEN 2 MONTHS AFTER THE BOOK IS PUBLISHED? THE CONSULTING COMPANY WHO BOUGHT THE ASSETS AT THE BANKRUPTCY AUCTION CLEARLY DOES NOT CARE ABOUT DETAILS EITHER.

STYLE
The book is similar to Osterwalder's Business Model Generation: A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers, which tries to create a similar kind of structure for business strategy (even though they use the more fashionable term business model). I like both books to some degree. However, both suffer from trying to include a bit too many concepts. Both books have ten parts frameworks and clearly the authors really wanted ten components to their frameworks. Another problem with both books is that many people will apply the frameworks mechanically, i.e. as check lists just to be ticked. Sadly, soon somebody will probably create software that instantly creates a business plan.

There is a recent trend to use graphics instead of text in books. Book publishing is traditional, but this is following what the management consulting industry did in the 1980s; slides instead of reports. It is good that the approach has reached book publishing some 25 years later.

Other problems? The authors' command of the English language is poor despite being native speakers. They also don't write much, maybe just 50 pages of text. The book is a bit too wild in the graphic layout. It is also clear that they hold back a lot of practical information and tools. They want to sell consulting services. Maybe even the new corporate owner of Doblin erased a lot of information. The examples are okay, but the description is remarkably shallow. I think fact checking could have been better.

The book is good, but not a masterpiece. Despite the flaws in style, the book is worth four stars.

Deep, Broad, Structured, Fundamental Reference for Adult Students and Professionals
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
Another reviewer has laid out the book's structure. This review builds on that one.

I've been a fan of several innovation books, such as The Innovator's Dilemma: When New Technologies Cause Great Firms to Fail and The Innovator's Solution: Creating and Sustaining Successful Growth, while also respecting earlier pioneers such as Peter Drucker, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. When I got this book my first impression was "too much design" (at first glance it looks like an advanced comic book) but after several passes I now consider this volume perfect -- the authors have put an EXTRAORDINARY amount of thinking into going beyond the ten types of innovation (each discussed in its own chapter) to the nuts and bolts of spotting trends, making innovation happen, and keeping innovation alive (often the hardest).

Certainly this book is superb for students in any sector -- government, private, non-profit, I'd even suggest the declining labor unions and churches study this book. It has universal value and applicability. It is also a book that is easily sufficient to warrant being in a CEO's handful of books worth returning to over and over again. At one level this is a textbook, at another level this book, as it is designed, is perfect for recurring reflection.

The underpinnings of the book are impressive -- over 3,000 cases. The index is usefully divided into Companies, People, and Topics.

Missing from this book -- perhaps even justifying a sequel -- is more emphasis on whole systems modeling, true cost economics, and completely new models of production such as the emerging trends of open money and new forms of accounting, sharing, and the new terms degrowth, anti-consumerism, and peak consumption. Although the book addresses the use of information to spot innovation opportunities, it does not address the fact that perhaps 80% of everything we are told by banks, corporations, and governments is a lie -- within academia that is probably closer to 40% but the other 60% is old knowledge. Somewhere, firmly rooted in this book but exploding beyond it, lies the concept of META-INNOVATION. Pioneers like Stewart Brand have tried to address this. Put simply, this book here is best in class for innovation from the inside out. Still missing, although I tried in my own way to address it (see my signature line), is a book on innovation from the outside in -- innovation that stems from a massive cultural shift that imposes buy-cotts against Monsanto, Walmart, Google, Microsoft, and other "innovators" that continue to betray the public interest and demands completely new forms of doing EVERYTHING, starting with Open Source Everything (OSE).

This was truly a disappointment. I read the "Look Inside" part of the text, and it promised that the book would provide a framework for teams to innovate in business-focused environments. I have read other books on innovation and they focused more on individual innovation, and creativity. This one, I thought, would be more practical. I was wrong. It is rather a very abridged collection of Harvard Case Study-like examples of when and where innovation occurred in the past. None of the snippets were helpful, and a few were actually wrong or mis-leading. Very disappointing stuff.

Cutter and Bone, by Newton Thornburg

"A thriller, and a whacking good thriller, too—shows how much can be done by a writer who knows his business—the best novel of its kind in ten years!" —THE NEW YORK TIMES

Cutter is a scarred and crippled Vietnam veteran, obsessed with a murder he's convinced his buddy, Bone, witnessed. That it was committed by the powerful tycoon JJ Wolfe only makes Cutter even surer that Bone saw the unthinkable.

Captivated by Cutter's demented logic, Bone is prepared to cross the country with Cutter in search of proof of the murder. Their quest takes them into the Ozarks—home base of the Wolfe empire—where Bone discovers that Cutter is pursuing both a cold-blooded killer, but also an even bigger and more elusive enemy.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Thornburg’s 1976 thriller may be the quintessential cult crime classic. It’s one of those books that isn’t widely known today—it came and went at the time of its publication, reviewed well but never garnering widespread attention—but continues to be cited by other writers as groundbreaking (George Pelecanos wrote the glowing introduction to the 2001 reprint edition). It’s a post-Vietnam novel as much as it is crime fiction, much like Robert Stone’s Dog Soldiers (1974). Its dual protagonists are Richard Bone, once a middle-class midwestern ad man, now a dissolute California drifter, and Alex Cutter, a crippled vet with a serious grudge against the corporate world. Bone sees a man he thinks might be tycoon J. J. Wolfe stuffing something into a trash can. That something turns out to be a hooker, and at Cutter’s prodding, Bone and Cutter attempt to find out if it really was Wolfe who did the stuffing. We know from the start that nothing good can come of their investigation. Cutter would have us think that nailing this one rich guy would be a small symbolic step toward righting a world that went seriously wrong with Vietnam. Bone, like the reader, knows differently but can’t help following the scent. There is a peculiar kind of despair that sinks into the bone marrow of damaged war survivors—film noir was born out of that despair in the post-WWII era—and Thornburg nails the Vietnam version. The ending is pure Chinatown, with a dose of Easy Rider, and it leaves us reeling. --Bill Ott

Dead Souls
By A. Ross
One of the best depictions of mid-'70s America I've come across, this powerful novel was written when the country was struggling to recover from the Vietnam War and remains as a vivid reminder of that time. Set mostly in Santa Barbara, the story follows two men firmly stuck in cycles of self-destruction. Bone dropped out of the corporate life and left his wife and kids in Minnesota to float around California as a gigolo, while Cutter came back from Vietnam minus an arm and a leg and teeters on the brink of insanity. Both are utterly disillusioned with the world around them and spend a great deal of time drinking and trying to blot out their rapidly suburbanizing, strip-mallifying, consumerist surroundings. The third member of this circle of dead souls is the sarcastic, Quaalude popping Mo, Cutter's live-in girlfriend and mother to his baby.
The whole book reads like one big hangover-the party (late '60s free love, rebellion, Vietnam, etc.) is over, and someone's gotta pay. One evening Bone unknowingly witnesses a murderer disposing of a victim, and what he half saw leads to a half-baked scheme to make some money. In another writer's hands, this could have lead to a comic caper, but Thornburg is intent on showing the county's loss of innocence through the bitter, maimed, and reckless Cutter, and his guilt-ridden and aimless buddy Bone. One problem I had with the story was the friendship between the two men. The book unfolds from Bone's perspective, and it's hard to fathom why he keeps returning to Cutter's side, other than guilt and/or a self-destructive streak.
In any event, the book starts fairly slow and there were a few times I considered ditching it. By the second half though, the lean prose gets more and more compelling, and the dilemmas get a bit more interesting. The final quarter or so takes the two men on a road trip from California to the Ozarks, in possible pursuit of the murderer. The climax is awfully gripping in a "y'all ain't from around here" Deliverance kind of way, and the final sentence packs a huge punch. ...Still, book's theme-that the Vietnam war did irreparable damage to the American psyche and values, and led to an America where money and consumption are king and justice is a mirage-emerges in full color, and the book remains an important picture of the empty '70s.
Note: This was made into a great dark film called Cutter's Way.

Read This One It's a Real Find!
By Joseph B Murray
The film is a neglected classic, and the novel it was inspired by is likewise. It will hook you as a good thriller does, yet also profoundly engage you with it's extraordinary mixture of the poetic and the grittily, absurdly real. The Characterisation is rich and broad and constantly surprising - tough yet warm - and it is stylistically muscular in a Chandleresque way, without ever becoming arch. Touching movingly on so many issues from some extremely archetypal relationships to the state of post-Vietnam America, Thornburg takes you on a rollercoaster ride that you won't want to get off. Finally, as an exploration of messed-up masculine insecurity it is devastating and compulsive with that rare thing in such books, great female characters! Read the book, see the film - you won't forget either.

Richard Bone is a handsome stud who uses women to his advantage. Alex Cutter is bitter Vietnam war vet: Crippled, relentlessly articulate, and seemingly always drunk, they make an unlikely friendship. That is until on day Bone witnesses a man dumping a dead body of a young woman; a man answering the description of a powerful business tycoon. So, pushed on by Cutter's vengeful maxims about the rich, they both decide to investigate in the hope of bringing the tycoon to book. But neither of them will ever guess the savage payoff. A powerful novel that deals with post-vietnam malaise and corporate power, this is highly recommended.
