I'm reading War of the Dwarves next!

The main heroes in fantasy novels are usually the special human 'chosen one', magicians and elves - so a story where the dwarves take center stage totally got my attention. The story is set in Girdlegard, an enchanted land wherein for hundreds & hundreds of years, the dwarven kingdoms have protected the borders against evil. I started reading the first chapter (prologue) on a whim and just couldn't quite put it down afterwards. This one was a winner - a really well-written prologue about how the dwarves of the Fifthling Kingdom fell victim to the evil of the Perished Land, thus opening up Girdlegard to invasion by evil creatures. That first chapter had heroic dwarf characters and epic battle scenes marked by betrayal and grand tragedy. Sucked me in for sure!

Then the novel goes into the present story proper, and we are introduced to the hero, the scholarly blacksmith dwarf and human foundling Tungdil. He ends up on a mission to save not just his fellow dwarves, but also all the good men and elves of Girdlegard. Markus Heitz doesn't really try to break new ground with his fantasy creatures - elves are elves, dwarves are dwarves, orcs are orcs... same as in 'Lord of the Rings'. He does add new evil creatures like the alfar (twisted elves), and he also give the dwarves a complex and well-structured society & culture (including politics) that hasn't really been delved into that much. And since Tungdil has grown up only amongst humans & knows as little about dwarves as we do, we discover dwarven-society with him as he goes about his mission.

Tungdil is a really likeable character, and I've always had a soft touch for the outsider / nerd turned hero. And the band of characters who end up being on Tungdil's team are a likeable (if mismatched) bunch too - a pair of dwarven warrior-twins, an alcoholic dwarven mason, a drama troupe that includes human (and not quite human) actors & prop master, a rebel magician & her mysterious demon bodyguard - I found myself just drawn in on all the action as Tungdil traveled across Girdlegard before the final battle with Nod'onn (former good magician who is turned by the Perished Land into evil).

I have to say though that the rest of the novel doesn't quite measure up to the brilliance of the first chapter; the quality of the writing becomes a bit uneven after that. For some strange reason, Mr Heitz writes majority of the dwarven characters really well, but fails when he has to write humans. Any chapter that concentrated on the humans (kings, magicians) ended up with stilted dialogue and wooden, flat and poorly developed characterization. Another disappointment for me was how weak Mr Heitz' villains were - from the supposedly villain-to-end-all-villains Nod'onn to the smaller villains - such as Bislipur (a dwarf who becomes Tungdil's adversary).

All in all though, I had a rip roaring time going through Tungdil's journey with him, and if the journey seemed a bit too long and circuitous at times with a bit too many X saves the day coincidences (the book really needed a good editor to trim-off many unneeded scenes), well, gosh-darn-it, I liked Tungdil too much and found the story too entertaining at that point to give up. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the series 'The War of the Dwarves' next!

stinky cheese and beer never sounded so good [no spoilers]

"The Dwarves" begins an exciting saga following Tungdil Bolofar, an orphaned dwarf raised by humans. The German translated novel presents a phenomenal story packed with great characters, a rich history, and a fun adventure. The blend of excellent political maneuvering and kick "axe" battles in the name of questing generates an instant classic.

The notable secondary characters are Lot-Ionan, magus and father figure to the blacksmith Tungdil, and the giant warrior Djerun, a mysterious guardian to And�kai, another maga. The magic system though somewhat vague requires great attention from a magus. The dwarven attitude and comments are very entertaining.

An enhanced map of the significant terrains and a more comprehensive appendix would have been useful.

I haven't enjoyed a storyline as much in over a year and highly recommend the series to any fan of the fantasy genre.

Practical advice on Buffett-like Value Investing

I have read many books on value investing. This is far and away among the top books that I will re-read over the years to come. (Others include The Intelligent Investor; The Most Important Thing; Common Stocks, Uncommon Profits; The Essays of Warren Buffett; and Margin of Safety). Mr. Hagstrom has put together a great primer on how to evaluate a company as an investment. His tenets are great checklist for your thinking as you evaluate the merits of a company and its value and then apply a margin of safety to figure out if it is attractively priced. I would highly suggest that you also purchase something along the lines of William Sahlman's Note on Free Cash Flow Valuation Models available through Harvard Business Review if you're now sure how to perform a discounted cash flow model. I would definitely recommend buying and studying this book.

Great learning experience

I would recommend this book to those with a moderate background in finance that have some knowledge in fundamental analysis. I say this because this topic is drilled home, but may be confusing for those who don't have some background knowledge in this area.

With that being said, I am very glad to have read this book as it has given me a better understanding of what I need to do to become a smart investor, as well as successful in life. Buffet is a true inspiration, and this book dives into what has made him so successful, so consistent, and yet so humble.

Great read, I would definitely recommend it.

Making Intercultural Teams Work

At a time when criticism runs high about "essentialist" approaches to understanding culture and cultures, Richard Lewis has been unflagging in insisting upon exploring the cultural tendencies. He addresses the thinking and behaviors that are likely to constitute our identity and steer our behavior and our reactions to each other when working together with others different from ourselves. Those who know his previous work have probably been most struck by his ability to make the various processes of communication, management and collaboration visible in the form of simple diagrams that are a relief from the academic blah-blah and the judgmental jargon that often surrounds them. Lewis's picture language often comes as a great relief to those looking to succinctly frame a cultural discourse in a handout or a PowerPoint slide.
Lewis forces us to ask the question of how much simplification is useful and how much is likely to feed our eternal tendency to simplistic stereotyping. First of all, like most decent professionals in the intercultural field, Lewis is absolutely clear about the fact that it is cultural discourse, cultural behavioral tendencies that are being identified--that the menu is not the meal. What is painted broad brush is the background, not the detail of the masterpiece each of us tries to paint from what we have been given and what we have learned. This background is real, and while there may be strong reasons to examine it carefully, case by case, one would have to be deliberately blind to not be able to identify the discourse, values and behavior that cluster in certain populations, groups, and are likely to show themselves in everyday collaboration.
Critics of essentialism are right in pointing out the dangers of oversimplification and the tendency to reinforce perceptions that are damaging and counterproductive. They are also right in looking at the socially constructed realities in which our discourses and identities are both shaped and imprisoned. It is urgent that we address these principalities and powers for a more just future for ourselves and those who will inhabit this tiny but still somewhat blue planet. However, dismissing our best guesses at knowing each other is both counterproductive and likely to leave us without the resources and handles we need to create the more important changes we seek.
This implies categorization, and those who already know the work of Richard Lewis are probably familiar with his tripartite model of cultural tendencies that posits three major categories: linear-active, multi-active, and reactive. In the first part of this book, Lewis unfolds and illustrates as well as provides examples of how these general classifications might work as a starting point for interpreting and responding to multiple others. The principal points of the book are illustrated with small case studies throughout. The focus of When Teams Collide is how to apply cultural insight to team performance.
The second chapter takes a look at how teams are formed and organized and the challenges of their priorities in completing the task or tasks, which is their raison d'�tre. A good deal of the book looks at language, a particularly important topic at a moment when English or, "Globish" as some say, serves as a lingua franca, but not an exclusive one, in international business.
The third chapter addresses leadership styles in the international team. Here there are multiple images diagramming cultural leadership style tendencies. The core structure of some of them is readily identifiable from Lewis's previous work, but generally expanded here to reveal a wider range of influences leading to how the manager of a specific culture is likely to experience his or her priorities and use his or her time when it comes to leadership style and behavior. Interesting, and perhaps controversial, is Lewis's courage in accepting and discussing the religious dimension of leadership and collaboration that may be explicitly involved or provide the ambience for managerial and team behavior. This has long been the "elephant in the room" that rarely gets noticed from the perspective of how it contributes to thinking, interpersonal behavior and decision-making. There is an interesting set of illustrations of the priorities and behaviors that shape the work and communication hub managers from different cultures on a day-to-day basis.
Chapter 5 addresses the profiles of team members from the perspective of assisting the manager or leader to guide diversity and assure performance. It is also here that Lewis speaks of the durability of culture that underlies the interpretations of the individuals affected by it. Lewis provides well over twenty national profiles of individual managers representative of their cultures--the largest single section of the book, illustrating how cultural thinking and priorities are carried out in everyday team management by managers of diverse backgrounds.
The sixth chapter returns to the use of language by discussing "Speech Styles And Meeting Procedures," and briefly reviews a variety of communication patterns, opening the way for a more detailed discussion of "Communicating in English" in Chapter 7 where we get a look at numerous examples of "coded speech, even including a small chart of politically correct and politically incorrect terminology. PC is perhaps a new form of US indirection in speech, but a number of the examples are hard to read without laughing out loud. The rest of the chapter addresses the importance of various habits of listening according to their slice size on pie charts, a number of these charts are extrapolated from Lewis's earlier work, When Cultures Collide.
Chapter 8 is a short disquisition on the use of humor in multicultural teams. I think it can be summed up in the perception that every culture has its own humor that can be expressed and applied in different ways and situations. However, humor remains a minefield in intercultural communication, and while Anglos, Brits and Americans may love wit and storytelling respectively, it takes a lot of imagination and inventiveness to explore, understand, and use humor in a way that it is constructive in multicultural team.
A ninth chapter on decision-making is both about the ways in which decisions are taken in different cultures and, how they're likely to be received, and this is of course intimately linked with the topic of Chapter 10, "Behaving Ethically." This, in my opinion, is far too short a chapter for a topic that is far too complicated. It uses as a case study the 2002 World Cup, perhaps topical in the sense that controversy is raging at the moment about the unethical, exploitative behaviors of several of the corporate suppliers to the upcoming London Olympics, which were intended to be the most human and eco-friendly event in the history of the games.
Chapter 11 is a critical one. "Trust in the team" is both an interpersonal matter and a matter of the characteristics that we identify in ourselves and others that can make or break trust, or simply erode it or even keep it from happening. All kinds of different elements can be pointed to in the construction and destruction of trust. We are little used to taking seriously small things that drive big decisions. Is it out of place to assert that "Germans... Want to trust individuals who are clean, tidy, and wear new clothes?" The problem is that many of these little things are quite impactful at an unconscious level, and we need to bring them to the conscious level to decide whether to act on them or dismiss them. Lewis writes often in a very direct style that will delight some and offend others. The best way to put it is that he is the kind of person who is willing to call a "spade", "a bloody shovel." In determining what is real and what is right, it is not just our unconscious processes that are involved, but our conscious understanding of, and might I say, commitment to culturally established processes of thought and what we have determined to be our definition of truth.
When Teams Collide is meant to be a practical and readable book, and it is. And while it discusses cultural behavior worldwide, it is inevitably representative of our Western take on ourselves and others, and, perhaps, one of our main challenges in this whole multicultural business is not to take ourselves too seriously, a behavior which Lewis's style fortunately supports, reminding us in a way that we have an awful lot to learn. Perhaps the appendix, "Cultural Spectacles" dealing with the lenses we look through when we gaze at each other is a most fitting conclusion. Summing it up is the phrase, "In an international team, nobody is normal," as seen through the eyes of others. Despite the individualism that insists that each person is unique and the challenges of understanding how real and how deep hybridity may be, despite the rising incidence of third culture kids, total cosmopolitanism is a long way off, and perhaps neither a reachable nor desirable goal. Paradoxically, we often pose ourselves as such simply to avoid the pain of being identified with something that someone else does not like about us or about the parents or places we came from. While there are some female examples, gender influences in cultural constructions is largely absent from the book.

Practical advice on the challenges facing today's multinational teams

Communications consultant Richard D. Lewis builds on his international experience to address a big stumbling block for global companies: the inability of people on multinational teams to cooperate. Members' conscious or unconscious cultural assumptions lead to the danger of unintentionally offending (or being offended by) other members. Lewis warns of the hazards of stereotyping various nationalities, and then he takes that risk often, though he bases his descriptions of cultural inclinations on extended research into cooperation on multinational teams. He says understanding leaders can overcome team members' widely differing organizational, linguistic and ethical perspectives. Your reaction will depend on whether you see his descriptions as illuminating or stereotyping. Lewis does provide practical steps for resolving cultural conflicts in 11 pivotal areas. Each chapter ends with case studies and includes well-intended but hard-to-interpret graphics. Fortunately, getAbstract finds the written text stands on its own.

Read with Caution

While Richard D. Lewis provides some good advice about dealing with other cultures, one must read this book with caution. He crosses the line and provides some appalling information as serious, to be heeded advice. Especially regarding what he calls "politically correct" preferred expressions, as well as some ill-chosen examples on p. 225. If anyone used some of these "politically correct" phrases in the U.S., s/he will be looked upon very negatively or as very offensive. This leads me to be suspect about the rest of his advice.

This book was made for winning

This is the first poker book that I have read all the way through. As much as I love poker, historically, I have not enjoyed reading about it. Most books about poker have these extended scenarios where the author gives a hypothetical example of the cards you have and the cards on the board and every possible version of what every other player might have. I find these stories incredibly boring and not helpful. They remind me of someone retelling a bad beat story at one table about something that happened at another table on another day at another casino. You had to be there for it to be interesting. Thankfully, this is not that type of book. Dr. Schoonmaker takes a different approach and writes about the way the game is played. He challenges the reader to take a hard look at themselves and their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to how they play poker. Even though I have been playing small limit games in Las Vegas as a tourist for over 10 years, I still found this book to be really helpful. I consider myself an action learner and most of what I know now about poker is what I've learned the hard way. It is only this year, though, that I have really focused on seat position as a strategy, thanks to Dr. Schoonmaker's advice. It has made a world of difference. I wish I would have read this book 10 years ago, I might have saved myself a lot of money. If you like to play small limit games, I think you would benefit from reading this book. It should pay for itself easily, the next time you play.

I have read most of the major books on limit holdem and have authored two of them myself as well as having written numerous columns for CardPlayer magazine covering Middle Limit Poker ($10-$20 and above). Due to the rise of no limit, most of the current action in limit poker is focused on small stakes holdem ($4-$8 and below) while the higher levels of limit holdem have almost died out. However, many of us still prefer limit poker and small stakes limit poker is very popular especially among those who are new to poker or just play for fun.

With the publication of this book, Dr. Al Schoonmaker has written one of the most important works ever on beating these small games. While there have been many books written about small games, they are all deeply flawed because they fail to address the impact of the rake, the jackpot drop, and other associated costs. Further, they make certain assumptions about how players react to bets and raises which turn out to be wrong. Finally, special rewards like high hand bonuses and other promotions that are funded by the jackpot drop can have a significant impact on how certain hands get played, which have never been addressed in previous books.

Al’s book does not present a formulaic approach to beating these games because there is no “formula.” He will not tell you what hands to play in what positions, when to bet or raise, and so forth. All this approach does is keep a novice from becoming a big loser. To become a winner, you need to understand things like pot-sizing, player types, seat selection, and a host of other factors beyond just starting hand values.

In closing, I know from having spent many hours playing with Al that he is among the most successful of all the small stakes players I have met. His book is a must read.

Terrific! A Must Read For The Typical Player!

“How to Beat Small Poker Games” is a terrific poker book!

Alan Schoonmaker, Ph.D. confronts the big questions: Can the recreational player overcome the overhead, rake, and promotion costs of a modern low-limit game in a card room? If that is possible, can a typical player lighten the weight of the obstacles which he carries with him through the door?

Following Alan's advice requires work and discipline. He explains why those are necessary. (Thank goodness, virtually no poker mathematics in this book.) Alan is aware that certain folks are happy where they are. Or are they?

He clearly states that achieving better results might not bring certain players more fun at the tables. As for me? I feel better when I do better. I am happy to apply his principles. Anything worth doing, is worth improving.

Alan Schoonmaker has extended his knowledge, rather like a handshake, to all the plumbers, waitresses, doctors, secretaries, young adults and seniors who sit, side by side, around the tables in card rooms spread across the land. We love the game. We want to book a few more wins at the cages -- just want to deal with the increasing high costs.

This book, to my knowledge, sets forth the cold, hard facts – present day realities, which I have never seen discussed in a book.

Most of us play cards to compete with others in an exciting game. Still, we want this to occur for a profit or reasonable price. At the same time, humans are “social beings.” I once asked Wasshim, our floorman, “What happens to the people who lose? Will the game dry up?”

Wass smiled, “Oh, they're still here. Some take a pauses to get another buy-in.” (This book will help keep the game going, despite higher costs. And all of us want to take fewer “pauses.”)

No, Dr. Schoonmaker is not my father! (I have never met or spoken with him.) He is known by his Good Works. You can wrestle the low limits to victory, if you follow his instructions.

Creative way to tell the meaning of Christmas

A farm family grows Christmas trees to sell, and the farmer's wife chooses the most beautiful tree for her own family, putting a sign on it, "Not for Sale". But when a poor family comes to the tree lot to see if they can pick out a tree from the free area (trees that have missing branches or crooked trunks), the poor family's little girl sees the beautiful tree and asks if she can choose that one. Everyone is embarrased that she asks, as the adults all know her family can't afford the tree. The farmer's wife responds that she is sorry, the tree isn't for sale...because they'd like the girl's family to have it as a gift. The book ends, "Yes, it was a great sacrifice. But it brought even greater joy. Isn't that just like Christmas?" The illustrations are very kid-friendly and fun. Applicable Bible verses are at the bottom of every other page. A creative and wonderful story.

A Delightful Children's Book Celebrating the True Meaning of Christmas!

It will make a great addition to your home bookshelf, as well as for grandparents to have in their collection. It is the perfect stocking stuffer for children to treasure for years to come.
