An earlier edition of this reference book was the text used by my pre-licensing instructor. Now that I'm licensed, I still keep an updated version on my reference bookshelf. It is simply a must have resource for any agent who dares to practice real estate in today's ever-more complex regulatory environment. I buy an updated copy at least every three year. In a profession which even the National Association of REALTORS� says is hobbled by incompetence and unethical behavior, "Modern Real Estate Practice" is a guiding light.

Now Acting Detective William Murdoch, who suspects it'll be years before he's promoted, is examining the doctor's household under a microscope. How long will it be before he finds out that Cyril Rhodes's servants are bursting with accusations against each other and their master? Or that the chilly relations between Dr. Rhodes and his English wife Donalda are based on a long-standing (and highly material) grudge? A Welcome Debut in the Historical Mystery Genre

In Jennings' debut, it is winter in 1895 Toronto and the police have discovered the nude body of a young woman. Initially believing that she was a woman of the streets who froze to death on her way home, the police are disposed to dismiss the death as accidental. However, they soon discover that while there was no alcohol in her bloodstream there was opium and other indicators that have them believing that she was murdered. Detective William Murdoch is assigned the task of not only finding out who murdered her, but who she is as well.
This is a police procedural in the truest sense. We watch as Murdoch painstakingly follows one tidbit to the next. For each question he thinks he's answered two more arise in his mind. As we go along, we are introduced to many players any one of whom could be the murderer.
Jennings was very clever in her writing of this procedural. While the reader quickly suspects various characters, Murdoch remains an innocent - willing to suspect someone, but not willing to believe with no proof. The bits of proof are doled out slowly - as slowly as it takes Murdoch to discover them. When all the puzzle pieces finally come together, the furtiveness of several characters is adequately explained, the choice of murderer makes sense, and there is relief that that the book has finally ended. The book moves slowly, sometimes bordering on tediousness, and the temptation is to set it aside for a faster read, but resist that temptation. As Murdoch pieces the puzzle together, the book picks up speed so that it may seem like Jennings has rushed the ending, but the way she has handled it, it makes sense for this book.

Good, but different to the TV series

I read this book because I recently started watching the Murdoch Mysteries TV series and absolutely love it. (Okay, I know it's been going for six years, but I just discovered it on a recent trip to Canada). I was a bit disappointed when I started reading the book because it was quite different to the TV series. Murdoch is okay, but not as dishy and charming as the TV Murdoch. There was also no sign of the sassy Dr Ogden or any love interest for that matter. The interesting inventions and forensics of the TV show were also missing. However, once I forgot about the TV Murdoch and just started treating it like a separate murder mystery, I started to enjoy it a lot more.

Maureen Jennings evokes the era really well. Her interesting descriptions and snappy dialogue make you feel like you really are in 1890s Toronto. The characterisations were good and historical elements were expertly woven into the story. She handled the class differences really well and brought the seedier side of the city to life. The pace picked up towards the end and the resolution of the mystery was satisying. There was also a hint that there could be a love interest for Murdoch in Book 2. I would possibly read more books in the series.

In summary, if you pick up this book because you like the TV series, you might be a little disappointed. But if you treat it as a separate Whodunnit, it's quite good.

Intense mystery with great effects

I considered Except the Dying a dark mystery. It takes place in Toronto in 1895. The townspeople come across as cold as the Canadian winter it occurs in. Detective Murdoch is trying to solve the crime of a young maid found frozen to death and he doesn't seem to be getting much help.
Maureen Jennings is a gifted writer. Her characters conversations made me feel a part of the story. The author has an ability to shock her readers at some points in her story and there was a couple of points in the first three of four chapters in which I was ready to bail. But, I stayed with it to try and solve the mystery. I would consider it a mature theme mystery.
Ms. Jennings has given us an interesting series. Can't wait to see it on film.

Awesome Book

This is a good book. I'm always fascinated about how women tick. The author goes into the psyche of women and shows you how they think. This is much better then the other stuff I've read about seducing women. While you can find much of the same information for free all over the internet, no one else brings it all together into one complete single guide like this. When Marks asked me to critique this book for him, I was a bit skeptical at first, but I’m glad he asked. I normally don’t read books like this, but How To Seduce Women was a fun read. It doesn’t give clich� advice, and Marks explains the reasons behind everything he says including how to talk to women and how to act. I don’t care what your current relationship with women is like; you need to read this book. Your love life will improve the moment you open it up. It’s a quick read though; too short, in my opinion. I wanted more when I reached the end, but maybe that’s for the sequel.

An excellent step by step guide of how to please women

As I read this book, I treated it as a step by step guide of actual applications for pleasing women. The author uses such a great writing style that you are probably going to want to read this more than once. I would recommend that you read it carefully, because the instructions are both extremely clear and effective. Marks does a great job of setting the right expectations for you and your partner from the beginning of the book. He asks you to identify who your partner is, what you admire most about her, and what it is that you would need to accomplish to improve your relationship. This book provides no-nonsense information about what women want, and I can tell you that it is not mere theory. It truly works!

I think the author nailed this topic on the head. While he doesn't cover everything (it's a pretty quick read), he definitely gives practical advice on how a woman thinks. As a woman, I was expecting to be angry and offended when I read this, but I was pleasantly surprised at the author's thoughtful and straightforward approach. This is a great book for women to pass on to their significant others.

Philipp Koehn is a lecturer in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. He is the scientific co-ordinator of the European EuroMatrix project and also involved in research funded by DARPA in the USA. I currently work at NLP software company in South Korea as an NLU software developer.
When I bought this book, I was finishing my own MT decoder and starting to
build a rudimentary IBM word alignment model trainer.

This book greatly contributed to the project in that it deeply corrected my wrong understanding of
many concepts such as dynamic programming, optimization, beam search, and etc.

Best part : It includes easy-to-understand pseudo-code for IBM 1~5 word alignment process.

It was also helpful in improving the performance of existing decoder.

As one of the leading figures in well-known Moses project and Euro Matrix,
author's explanation is firmly grounded upon practical experience and
includes a lot of elements required for building a prototype MT system.

I believe reading this book with the background knowledge
that you can learn in such books as Artificial Intelligence
: A Modern Approach or Mitchell's Machine Learning,

Gold Standard in SMT

Philipp Koehn is a superb lecturer and teacher in the area of statistical machine translation (SMT). I have being living off his lecture notes from the ACL, LSA summer session and Edinburgh for years and eagerly waiting for this book to tie everything together.

Koehn has the ability to take complex statistical concepts and make them comprehensible. And he has an encyclopedic knowledge of the state-of-the-art in SMT. His bibliography alone is worth the price of this book.

This book will be the gold standard in SMT for years to come. I would highly recommend to students and professionals in the field.

Must-have for all scientists working on SMT

It is more or less obligatory reading for anyone working on the topic. Goes through most important methods and approaches to implementing the system and the algorithms are described well enough that one can re-implement them easily. There are some errors that can be problematic if you forget to check the errata. Sometimes the notations of formulas are a bit hard to follow. All in all rather well written school-book for contemporary statistical machine translation.

Featured Recipe from The Little Paris Kitchen: Canard à l’Orangina (Duck with fizzy orange)

Serves 4 as a main

When I was invited to a dinner hosted by Chef Jean-François Piège, he described how his previous elaborate style of cooking at the Hôtel de Crillon had evolved into something a lot more simple and homely at his current restaurant in the Hôtel Thoumieux. He told an amusing story of how his wife wanted duck à l’orange for Sunday supper and all he could find at his local corner shop was Orangina, so he used it to make a sauce for the duck. I’m not sure exactly how he made his canard à l’Orangina, but here’s my version. A simple watercress or wild arugula salad works well with this dish.

For the Marinade:

finely grated zest and juice of 1 orange
1 tbsp olive oil
½ tsp ground cumin
1 tsp salt

To Make the Marinade

Mix together the orange zest and juice with the olive oil, cumin, and salt.

The Duck

4 duck legs
7 tbsp orange soda
2 tbsp Cointreau
a pinch of salt
1 tsp red wine vinegar
4 oranges, cut into segments

Rub the marinade over the duck legs and leave to marinate for a minimum of an hour (or in the fridge overnight).

Preheat the oven to 325°F. Put the duck legs with the marinade into a roasting pan and cook for 1 hour or until tender. Halfway through cooking, baste the duck with some of the pan juices.

Fifteen minutes before serving, pour the orange soda and Cointreau into a large frying pan, place on a high heat, and simmer until reduced by half. Stir in the salt and vinegar before adding the orange segments. Simmer for another 5 minutes.

Serve the duck legs hot, with the orange segments and sauce.

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Resting time: 1 hour–overnight

Cooking time: 1 hour

A must have for cooks but buy the UK edition

I've made many recipes including the chouquettes (choux pastry puffs), cheese and potato nests, egg in ramekins, lavender chicken, and cherry compote French toast, all of which will now be recipe staples. They were simple to make yet really impressive looking and tasty. This is my first cookbook by her, but I'm certain I'll buy her others. There are a lot of unique recipes I want to try and I appreciate the section in the back dedicated to staple recipes for chicken stock, mayonnaise, and vinegarettes, which every cook should learn. Her book has a combination of beginner and intermediate recipes, so new or seasoned cooks should find something appealing. The TV series that accompanied this book is equally delightful. Some French ingredients may be hard to find, but she gives substitutes, which may be easier to find.

Buy a digital scale for the dessert recipes in the UK edition. I own both the US and UK editions and the original version is much better. The recipes turn out much better when the ingredients are measured by weight rather than volume.

A great introduction to French food

I fell in love with Rachel's quirky and energetic personality when I saw an episode of her show on the cooking channel. I had to find a cookbook of hers after watching her cook lavender honey chicken in her quaint kitchen.

This feels like a great introduction to French food. There are easy recipes in here that show people French cooking isn't difficult like many stereotypes present otherwise. The lavender honey chicken recipe that I saw on T.V. was in here and it is quite simple.

This also had intermediate and advanced recipes for those who are not intimidated and/or have a higher skill level when it comes to cooking. There are recipes for profiteroles, custards, poached fruit etc.

I love that Khoo puts her own spin on some classic French dishes. She uses her English roots and Austrian background in some of her dishes as inspiration to reinvent classical dishes.

My only complaint is how the book is broken down. Rather than being broken down into meals or categories like meat, poultry, dessert etc. the book is broken down into sections like picnic food, snacks, cooking for company etc. All the sweet and savory dishes are mixed together making it harder to find a dish. I have to flip to the back to find a recipe in the glossary. I've made a little list on a post it note with dishes I want to try according to their "meal" category, like appetizer, dinner, dessert etc. so it's easier to find a recipe.

Overall, this is a lovely cookbook though!

Good starter for those new to French cooking or even cooking

I really have enjoyed learning from this little Kindle book. Simple recipes. I love using a scale for cooking I think weight is more accurate than spoonfuls so I look for recipes that use weight. The Kindle edition is in spoonfuls and cups.. I made the chicken dumplings (Quenelles) with soup, the husband loved them, I think I will like them more with the white sauce (bechamel) and cheese. The chouquettes were yummy (I bought the pearl sugar here on Amazon). The madeleines are amazing (I bought the tin here on Amazon) These is a cheese recipe that everyone can make quickly, it's scrumptious. There are a lot of basic sauces and dishes. I'm very rural and landlocked so fresh seafood isn't always an option It's a nice little book with lovely photo's. I have all 6 of her tv shows on my dvr and use them in addition. If I had the chance to live in a tiny, tiny little apartment in the nice part of downtown Paris for a season, I'd be on the next plane out! These are more approachable than some of Laura Calder's although I love her work as well. For instance, baguettes brushed with extra virgin olive oil sprinkled with grated chocolate and toasted in the oven. Tasty and easy. This isn't low fat so be ready to ramp up the exercise. Good starter on French Food.
