One of the Best Christmas Anthologies Out There!

Jennifer Blake is an all-time favorite and the short-story "A Vision of Sugar Plums" is great to read snuggled up by a cozy fire with something warm to sip on. I have re-read it several times! How is it that the gabby woman stuck in the elevator with a department-store Santa the night before her wedding wears you down until you start to like our heroine? Olga Bicos' "Naughty or Nice" is fun. While Hannah Howell's "The Yuletide Gift" takes us back a century or two to the Highlands with a wonderful story of a woman who melts our hero's heart. I liked this one, a lot! Sadly, Fern Michael's "Merry, Merry" is a little too predictable, but get the book anyway - it's worth it!

In this review, I've included the back cover blurb for each novella, followed by my review.

1) A Vision of Sugar Plums by Jennifer Blake: Meghan Castle is a real Scrooge about the holidays...until she finds an abandoned baby in her store on Christmas Eve. Change is certainly in the air--especially when late shopper Rick Wallman walks in with yet another delightful holiday surprise...

I didn't even finish this one. The "hero" (so-called) is a lying manipulator. Not exactly something I find romantic. He lies to the heroine from the beginning, and from what I could tell, for no good reason except to get what he wanted. The author tries to redeem him by making the reason that he lied was because he fell in love with the heroine at first sight and lied to keep her. I didn't buy it. He didn't even know her for more than two seconds before he starts lying to her. Why couldn't he have just told the truth and then asked her out on a date, like a normal person? Who wants to have someone through trickery, instead of true love?

2) Naughty or Nice by Olga Bicos: Just when Phoebe Nichols is starting to get cold feet about her Christmas wedding, fate steps in: she's trapped overnight in an elevator with a handsome department store Santa. He's the most impossible man she has ever met--impossible to resist, impossible to forget, impossible not to love.

This was the only story in the whole book that was worth reading. I kept the book for this one novella. I would have thought that a story that takes place almost entirely within 5 hours in an elevator would be boring. Boy, was I wrong! I was gripped from the first page, and couldn't put it down until I finished it. Both characters jumped right into my heart and stayed there. Also, it was a really nice change to read a novella that didn't have all those distracting point-of-view changes within a scene. If there was a thought, you knew who was thinking it without having to backtrack. This story alone is what saved this book's rating and earned it four stars. Highly recommended!

3) The Yuletide Gift by Hannah Howell: Fleeing an arranged marriage, Jessa rushes out into a raging Highland snowstorm. The only shelter she can find is a dreary castle...where she helps a handsome but unhappy laird turn the Yuletide bright with the magic of unexpected love.

Boring! Forced myself through the first 25 pages before I skipped. My mind kept wandering. The story just did not engage me. And I know that the writer was trying to make their speech authentic to the time period (1400AD), but when I have to read the dialogue aloud to understand what they're saying, it's no longer a diversion - it starts to feel like homework instead of entertainment. (And please note that I do not have a reading problem - I actually read about two to three grades above my level throughout elementary and high school, so it's not a "dumb reader" problem.)

4) Merry, Merry by Fern Michaels: Struggling veterinarian Andi Evans figures her holidays are going to the dogs when she clashes with Peter King, a cosmetics magnate who wants to buy a piece of the land she owns. But the focus soon shifts from property to passion as, this Christmas, the king of beasts lies down with the lamb.

Sorry to all the Fern Michaels fans out there, but I think this authors writing is terrible. This story read like something written by a fifteen-year-old who's about to fail English class. What is with all those big long speeches? Can't anyone talk without flapping their gums for ten minutes straight? And passion? What passion? I felt absolutely no spark between the characters. They talk, argue like preteens, and then at the end, it's like, "Let's get married."

"We can't get married, we haven't even slept together yet."

"Well, let's go do it now."

"Okay."

They walk up the stairs together. The end.

Yeah, really romantic - not! I forced myself through this novella and wished I hadn't wasted my time.

I would recommend trying to find this in a thrift or used book store, or maybe borrowing it from the library, if they have it. The one novella is very good, the rest don't deserve to be in the same binding as it.

Excellent book for my 9-yr old

We ordered this book for my daughter for her birthday. She has checked it out of the school library a few times and just loves reading it. It is easily one of her all-time favorite books. The other books by Shel Silverstein are great as well, but this one was her first sampling and she just loves it. A great book for elementary school-aged kids. My daughter is 9 and has been reading this since she was 8 and it is something I could see her reading for a few more years without getting bored of it.

If you are a Shel Silverstein fan you should check out this delightful volume.

This is the second book (Where the sidewalk ends by Shel Silverstein) I have read by this author. I found the first one (The Giving Tree) was delightful but short. This 166 page hardcover volume is also a fantastic read. The book is filled with short but expressive poems. Each poem also includes his unique and unusual drawings, which really make the book, come alive.

The author has an ability to amuse, entertain and even teach lessons with his unique approach to poetry and art. Some of the many wonderful poems in this book includes the following: Hug O’ war, it’s dark in here, colors, Joey, early bird, sky seasoning, the farmer and the queen, rain, true story, enter this deserted house, jumping rope, who, me-stew and many, many other wonderful poems and lessons. Even though this book is aimed at younger readers I think adults will also find it an interesting read.

If you are a Shel Silverstein fan you should check out this book. I found it an amusing read.

Sent as a gift

Children in the U.S. are SO lucky to have books at their fingertips. That is not the case in other countries.

Last year, I sent my friends new son a few books for his first birthday. I had no idea the books I sent were his very FIRST ONES! Apparently, literature is SO taxed, it is not easily available. I take children's books for granted. I think we all do.

Shel Silverstein brings back wonderful memories from my daughter's childhood and fortunately, she has passed on her love of reading to her own two daughters. I could not imagine childhood without certain books and I had to send "Where the Sidewalk Ends" to my friends for Christmas. This book is one that they can all enjoy (and it may be a bright spot in learning English for their wonderful little boy!).

I wish I could send more books to them. And I will. Over time.

The first topic describes the nature and availability of coal. Next, the fundamentals of gasification are described, followed by a description of gasification technologies and gas cleaning processes. The conversion of syngas to electricity, fuels and chemicals is then discussed. Finally, process economics are covered. Emphasis is given to the selection of gasification technology based on the type of coal fed to the gasifier and desired end product: E.g., lower temperature gasifiers produce substantial quantities of methane, which is undesirable in an ammonia synthesis feed. This book also reviews gasification kinetics which is informed by recent papers and process design studies by the US Department of Energy and other groups, and also largely ignored by other gasification books.

I lost confidence in this book

The author had the good idea to present formulas for Ash Fusion Temperature taken from Seggiani and Pannochia. It was even a better idea to present the formulas in a readable format.
Unfortunately, the author did not realize that the SV (silica value) and the DR (dolomite ratio) were defined on a weight basis, while all other formulas were defined on a mole basis.
The resulting formulas 1.4 to 1.8 are therefore unreliable if you do not use the original paper at the same.
This ruins the whole idea of writing such a book, if the formula are not reliable.

About the Author
Adrian is a prolific researcher, writer and presenter, and is currently editor of SAGE's HSS journal Tourist Studies. He has written numerous articles for a range of journals, from Journal of Sociology and Body and Society to International Review for the Sociology of Sport and Environment and Planning D. He has written three previous book for SAGE: Tourism: An Introduction (2003), Nature and Social Theory (2002) and Animals and Modern Culture (1999).

He also presents a television show called The Collectors (ABC, Australia).

Excellent, Thoughtful Overview of Human-Animal Interface in Industrial Societies

I'm astonished by both the depth and the breadth of this sophisticated examination of a range of human-animal relationships in modern Western society. Unlike the previous reviewer, I have read it and intend to use it in a college course I am developing. I find it especially helpfully in providing an overview of broad topics, such as the historical shift from small family farms to massive agribusinesses, a shift that has produced a factory farming system that is truly, egregiously inhumane to so-called "food animals" such as cows and pigs. The beauty of the chapter is that it discusses a variety of such animals, so the breadth is really much appreciated by those of us who need a sort of thumnail of the shape of modern agribusiness. At the same time that he provides a useful overview of historically situated and changing relationships, Franklin also makes some theoretical contributions to this now-burgeoning, multidisciplinary field. For example, in his chapter on pets, he argues that in the modern capitalist context, pets address our pervasive, if under-discussed, sense of "ontological insecurity." We've lost the kin networks and communities of yesteryear and cats and dogs help to fill in the social (and perhaps existential?) gaps that yawn before us in modern life. There are now so many scholarly books about the human-animal interface out there these days, but Franklin was way ahead of his time with this accessible and thoughtful 1999 publication. As to the cost, about which the previous reviewer complained: yes, it's a real bummer, what academic books cost these days. But let us give credit where it is due, especially to hard-working scholars who are not making money on such under-appreciated publications.

Get a 5 on the exam with this!

I bought this in the beginning of the school year and actually used it as my APUSH textbook. The chapters in here are really short, usually around 10 pages, and they pack in the best information. There's also multiple choice and short answer questions at the end of each chapter, if that's something you're looking for. I would definitely reccomend buying this book a while BEFORE the AP exam though, because if you want to seriously go through each chapter and read and take in the info, it will take you a while.

A beautiful struggle

This is a very rich guide to the ruins of Pompeii. The author is, without doubt, a scholar of distinction. The reconstructive drawings are second to none. The layout of the book is beautiful. However, as an introduction to the subject, the book is a struggle. The writing is often turgid, burdened with unnecessary archaeological terminology: The hip bone is connected to the peristyle, the peristyle is connected to the pronaos, the pronaos is connected to the portico, the chalcidicum is connected to the knee bone.... The glossary at the end of the book is hopelessly inadequate - a mere afterthought. The publishers would do well to study the DK Pulishing model and invest the book with a few introductory pages explaining the vast terminology employed throughout the work with architectural diagrams and arrows. It might then be a masterpiece.
