Asmara or bust!
By Michael Lanigan
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. The very first day I received this book in the mail I went down to the local Eritean restaurant here in Western Australia and by mixing and matching words and phrases culled from different pages of this book I spoke dozens of sentences to the waitress and owner who couldn't believe their ears. The owner said she had lived in Australia for twenty years and I was the first Caucasian person she had ever heard speaking Tigrinya. I learned German when I was 15 and I found out that if you just master the use of the modal verbs you can say almost anything in any language. Thankfully this little book puts all the modal verb constructions together on one or two pages - instead of making you fight your way through a complete course book full of horrendous dialogues to extract the same information like other books do. There is an ample treatment of the script, everything is written in Tigrinya script and also written in a very user friendly phonetic romanisation which is the major plus of the book. The vocabulary lists are arranged thematically which is of enormous assistance to memorising. There is a basic grammar included including full conjugations of the major tenses as well as their negative counterparts. There is no explanation of the tri-consonantal root system of vocabulary but quite frankly after being confused by this for a whole year when learning Arabic I found out after I learned to speak Arabic that it is stuff you really don't need to know. A major drawback of the book is that there is no treatment of relative clauses. The owner of that Eritrean restaurant now wants to take me back to Eritrea to amaze the locals with my command of Tigrinya and it's all thanks to this little book.

The Best Way to Prepare Yourself for Travel/ Stay/Work in Northern Ethiopia
By Elizabeth Pelz
No one can expect to gain complete fluency from reading just one language guide book. This book, however, is the perfect start. Many dictionaries/ guides just list vocabulary and/or phrases with little to no context to fully understand them and many are tedious to navigate. I lived in Tigray, Ethiopia for two years and this would have been the ideal substitute for the very few resources that were available for learning this less commonly taught language. The demand for Tigrignya language skills is beginning to climb and if you do not have the option to find a language tutor or class, The Essential Guide to Tigrinya helps you learn the more common words and phrases needed in everyday life rather than put weight into archaic or "standard" curriculum that so often stuff language guides. The layout and flow of the book are simple, but the content is very informative. I can say from experience, as someone who spent two years perfecting her Tigrinya through all the mistakes, misunderstandings, greetings and meaningful conversations, the words and phrases in this book are all 100 percent useful and you will be able to start your stay in Ethiopia's northern province (and maybe one day Eritrea if the situation ever gets better) with the level of fluency to get around and make life easier.

A well organized and very useful introduction to the very important Tigrinya language.
By Curt Peterson
Abraham Teklu and Andrew Tadross have accomplished an amazing thing with this book. Tigrinya is a very important language that supports and reveals a rich and wonderful culture. There are Tigrinya speakers in many parts of the world as a result of political and economic factors in Eritrea and Tigray, and this book can very importantly help them pass on their amazing heritage to their children. I worked four years, 1966 thru 1970, as a Peace Corps Volunteer teaching high school physics in Asmara, Eritrea. I learned some Tigrinya with lots of help and encouragement from students and friends, and I find this book to be a truly golden resource for my language recovery and the expansion of my Tigrinya vocabulary. The use of phonetic as well as the Tigrinya characters, Fidel, is a wonderful aid to the beginning student attempting to learn to speak, read and even write the language. The grammar and conversational context materials are excellent, and the considerable vocabulary is presented in logical sets of categories for ease of reference, study and practical usage. I am one of many Anthropologists who consider language and thought to be profoundly connected. Tigrinya is a member of the Semitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic languages, and learning to speak it can give the serious learner a new and different way to think about and perceive reality. I highly recommend this book to all those with an interest or need to know and use this amazing language of Northern Ethiopia and Eritrea.
