Great book.

Great little book, just keep in mind it's more from the residential perspective. You'll find a lot of "been there!" moments. Nice for a little bit of a gut check for when you think you know everything, cuz nobody does.

Oh yeah, and the chapters are very bite-sized. Perfect for taking a seat in the erhm...home office.

Surprised I haven't seen this one at the partshouses, actually....

The preeminent introductory textbook book on the art of film

Teaching film requires you to look at film. The second week of my film course (they are always night classes that meet once a week so that you have enough time to actually screen something) I always drag in about 50 videotapes to work through the basic vocabulary of the cinema, covering everything from the close-up ("Queen Christina") to the crane-shot ("Gone With the Wind"), from tracking shots ("Touch of Evil") to the jump cut ("2001: A Space Odyssey"). Film textbooks face an inherent limitation in turns of what they can present on the printed page. However, "Film Art: An Introduction" by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson is the proverbial exception to the rule. This is the preeminent introductory film textbook because it has literally hundreds of frames from classic and lesser known films, used to illustrate the key concepts of mise-en-scene, cinematography and editing.
"Film Art" is divided into five main sections: (I) Types of Filmmaking, Types of Films" covers how films are produced and the basic types/genres of films. (II) "Film Form" examines both narrative and nonnarrative formal systems in film, using "Citizen Kane" as a case study for narrative form. (III) "Film Style" is the main section of the textbook, dealing with the shot in terms of both mise-en-scene and cinematography, how editing relates shot to shot, and the function of sound. This section concludes with an analysis of film style in five diverse films. (IV) "Critical Analysis of Film" provides four distinct critical frames of reference and analysis of various films: Classical Narrative Cinema in "His Girl Friday," "North by Northwest" and "Do The Right Thing"; Narrative Alternatives to Classical Filmmaking in "Breathless" and "Tokyo Story"; Documentary Form in "High School" and "Man with a Movie Camera"; and From, Style and Ideology in "Meet Me in St. Louis" and "Raging Bull" (and if that last combination does not give you an indication of the breadth of the examples used by Bordwell and Thompson, nothing will). The textbook concludes with a bibliography, glossary and list of helpful websites.
There are two major strengths to this textbook. First, its complete coverage of cinematic concepts. I think that everyone learns how to "read" a film, but the vast majority of people would not know that the baptism sequence in "The Godfather" is a prime example of "American montage." You read this textbook and you will become aware of things you already understood on a more abstract level. Additionally, they do not stop at first or second level terms, but get into the absolute nuts and bolts of cinema. Second, the use of specific examples from numerous films to demonstrate these concepts. Unless you have a film textbook that has a CD-Rom with miniature film clips, you cannot find one superior to what Bordwell and Thompson offer up here. Furthermore, their use of examples clearly demonstrates their formidable knowledge of the field. The only downside to using this textbook in your film class is that you might have a problem convincing your students you know half as much as this pair.

How to get a Degree by not working.

Way back when I went to University in dear old Blighty. My degree was Film,Tv and Radio Studies, and despite my total lack of application, or to be frank attendance, I graduated with honours and a unhealthy infatuation with Wine, Women and Song. There are two reasons why I graduated, 1 I have the ability to retain information, 2 Film Art by Boardwell and Thompson. Quite frankly the best text book in the history of further education. It is simple enough for the most inexperienced of students, but also it's depth and coverage is enough to give a basic foundation in the most complex of film theory. God bless you Boardwell & Thompsen, and if anyone out there wants both a degree and liver problems as a result of University, BUY THIS BOOK

Great Book

This is a great book that gets to the point quickly. Bought other C++ books by very knowledgeable authors, but they tend to spend a lot of (boring) time making sure you know how smart they are. This book will give you a good foundation in C++ to build on, quickly. This is the first C++ book I have been able to get through. I have about 15 years of programming experience, but never really got to work with C++. This book really makes the transition easy. Start with this one first, I wish that I had.

Terrific value for your money!

I can't believe this is the first review! This book is amazing both for the quality and the price (the kindle version is so inexpensive, I thought at first it was a mistake).

After several years using other languages, mostly Objective C, I had to return to C++ this morning. I played around around for a few hours, and it was obvious I needed a brush up. There were many changes in C++ 11 that I wasn't aware of...

The book certainly did live up to it's title: I was not only impatient, I was in a crazy hurry. I bought it this morning, around 11. It is now 20:00 (that's 8 PM, my dear american friends ;-) and I just finished reading it. This is BY FAR the best intro to C++ I've seen: short (for a C++ book) and to the point.

If you need to learn C++ or brush up your skills, by all means buy it. The author did a terrific job. Thank you so much and congrats! :-)

There's no filler and the explanations are cogent. This book outlines the elements of the language and illustrates how they work to form a cohesive whole. It's not narrative, so I can skip the parts I'm already comfortable with, and there are no cloying attempts at personalization. If you prefer to mainline your knowledge, this is a good hit.

More Norse legends for our time

Fans of Joanne Harris's epic "Runemarks" have had a long three-year wait for this sequel, "Runelight". Fortunately, the wait has not been in vain; the sequel is a stupendous follow-on from the earlier book, easily exceling its predecessor in every possible way. Indeed, the book is a veritable tour-de-force, quite as action-packed as the earlier volume but now with a much more balanced and controlled story-line that never feels contrived or contorted, carries plenty of mystery and intrigue, managing to pop up a fair few surprises along the way, usually just at the point where you're convinced you've worked out what's going to happen next. The text has an easy flow to it, provides plenty of humour pitched for all age groups and all in all offers not a single dull moment throughout its entire 570-odd pages. No fan of the earlier volume could possibly be disappointed by 'Runelight' (if you haven't read the earlier book you would be well advised to do so before tackling this one) especially as while coming to a nice, satisfying conclusion, there are nevertheless clear options for more to come in the future.

Let us just hope that Joanne Harris doesn't keep us all waiting quite so long for the next one!

Well written, but...

This is the sequel to Runemark and I strongly recommend that you read Runemark first. The story continues (a few years later) the fantasy based around Norse gods and their associated worlds and myths. It is the sort of thing I would expect to like and there were plenty of good things about it but somehow it just didn't quite draw me into its world or grip me with its story.

Joanne Harris writes very well. She has an easy, readable style and creates original characters. I liked the modern-day characterizations like the two dim, thuggish wolf-humans calling each other "dude," and her world is well painted. I find it hard to put my finger on why I didn't really respond to the book. One factor was that the writing, although good, seems a little one-paced. Around page 130, for example, a tremendous event occurs but the tone didn't really change and it didn't seem to excite me any more than the scene-setting before it. I found this throughout the book and ended up being a little unsatisfied by it.

Another problem for me was the sheer complexity of the world's make-up and of the relationships, friendships and enmities among its huge number of characters and peoples (I use the word loosely.) There is a very helpful diagram of the Worlds, a good map and a cast of characters (plus a good synopsis of Runemark for new readers) but even with this I found myself rather lost among who was at war with whom and why.

Plainly others have enjoyed this book enormously and I can see why so please don't let me put you off, but I'm afraid it didn't quite do it for me.

I ordered this book for my 14 year old son who had read the first book (actually 3 times) and was eagerly awaiting book number 2. Since he got this for Christmas he's been up late at night reading and loves it.

One of the better jig books

I am finding this to be one of the better jig books I own. When thinking about building a jig such as a band saw circle cutting jig or a cross-cut box for a table saw, I've looked around the internet, but have always come back to build the jigs in this book simply because they offer more versatility and features.

This book is written by the editors of Woodsmith and ShopNotes Magazines, and is very well written and very clearly drawn. Not all machine tools are built the same and there are notes in the plans of the dimensions you will need to change based on your machine. This book is very inexpensively priced on the used book market, and is well worth the money if your budget is tight.

Well written and Illustrated book

Book was like new - spiral bound and was delivered on time. Most of the jigs are a bit complex and would be expensive to build if the recommendations of the book are followed; however, all of the jigs are very useful if one spends a great deal of time in their woodworking shop. The author introduces the jig, then goes into great detail of how to build it listing the materials required the spends time explaining how to use the jig to get the most use from it.

About the Author

Cynthia R. Green, Ph.D., is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry and the founding director of the Memory Enhancement Program at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She is the president of Memory Arts, LLC, and the author of Total Memory Workout. Joan Beloff, ACC, ALA, is the director of Community Outreach and of the award-winning New Vitality program at Chilton Memorial Hospital.

Sad but true

As your loved one becomes more disease than the person you fell in love with, it's harder and harder to find things to talk about that will not upset him or find things he can comprehend enough to talk about. This book is simple-actually I was expecting it to be a bit more-but has some nice suggestions. Every time I visit him he finds it harder to communicate. I hope this will give us something to do together.
If you have someone with Alzheimer's or Dementia, this book could be nice to have.

Not what I expected.

This book is described as a "workbook," which made me think that it had question/answer content with places to personalize with one's own answers. I was hoping that it could prompt recollections that could be written in the book, and then the book could be referenced back as my Mom's Alzheimer's progresses. Unfortunately, it's more like a very beautiful coffee table book with descriptive text. The questions in it were well above where my Mom's abilities are currently and fairly abstract. I wish I'd been given either a quote out of the book or a photo of a text page in the Item Description, so that I could have matched it better with my Mom's level, especially since each person experiences Alzheimer's differently.

Not for Independent Reading but a Nice Activity Book

This is a good book, it just wasn't what I was looking for. First, it has in big text "For memory impaired' on the cover, so that ruled out giving it to my grandmother. Also, inside is tons of text. It's my fault for not reading the description I guess, but this is not for independent reading. This is for if you want to hold the book yourself and read it to someone. One side is a big pic and the other is a list of 'things you can talk to the person about' regarding the pic. If you're looking for an activity that you can do with an older person, this would be for that.
