About the Author
F. D. Giddings was born in Fort Collins, Colorado on February 14, 1939. He was the third generation of a pioneer family that arrived in Fort Collins in 1883. F. D. (Frank Dennis) spent most of his teen years working for his father in the Giddings Machine Company where he learned welding, foundry and machinist skills. He was a natural at creating two and three dimensional representations of anything he was associated with leading to his first illustration commission as a student of Zoology at Colorado State University in 1960. Professor David B. Pettus became aware of FD's skills while grading the student's laboratory sketches and hired him to illustrate his laboratory guide published by Burgess Publishing Company. Graduating in 1962 with a degree in Zoology, FD worked in Arizona one year and Montana one year as a field crop entomologist before moving back to Fort Collins to apply for a new position of Medical Illustrator advertised by the college of Veterinary Medicine. When the illustration job failed to materialize, he became a technician in emphysema research as an electron microscopist while illustrating his second book. His illustrations were soon noticed by other researchers and clinicians in the college of Veterinary Medicine which led to his being appointed in 1974 to the directorship of the school's media center generating all illustration and photography for the college of Veterinary Medicine and Allied Health Sciences. He continued to work at the university until 1995 when he left to devote all his time to his illustration business. He continues as a free lance illustrator and publisher to this day.

Once again Dr. Gary Null, unlike many of today's over-hyped TV doctors and infomercials, keeps it totally real and understandable when it comes to living by better health habits. We all will get older --- if we're lucky. What matters is the quality of our health over the decades. Dr. Null quietly and fully, without hype or celebrity fanfare, gives the facts versus fantasies about real good health.

This book is very helpful. It's very big and has a lot of information. It's not an easy read and I had to have a pen and notebook handy to jot down notes from one chapter to the next. Lots of good stuff in here, just not plain and to the point. There's no "getting healthy now", more like "get healthy in a month after you finish reading this and replace all of the junk in your pantry".

In 1943, after reading about her in Pic Magazine, Ethel Barrymore wrote to Susan Anderson and offered to buy the dramatic rights to her life. "Doc Susie," then 73, responded "Fiddlesticks." Ethel Barrymore had good instincts: Doc Susie's life was dramatic. Virginia Cornell's straightforward, accessible biography begins in 1907 when Susan Anderson, already a practising physician, is dying of tuberculosis at the age of thirty-seven. She takes a death-defying train ride to the tiny, isolated high-altitude town of Fraser, Colorado, where she cures herself, then stays on for the next fifty-one years to treat the resident population of loggers, farmers, railroad personnel, and tunnel diggers. An opinionated woman, she is eager to lecture rural patients on the importance of vitamins, swing an axe at an illegal still, or tell off a farmer for treating his cows with more care than his pregnant wife. She refuses to use or prescribe any drugs, even painkillers. When telephones are installed, she tries one, then gets rid of it. She never buys a car; instead she hitches rides on horses, cars, and trains (sometimes on the cowcatcher if the ride is short). Compelling Biography

While Doc Susie’s story is interesting and inspiring in itself, author Virginia Cornell’s narrative approach is what makes the biography so compelling. Cornell grew up in Hideaway Park, two miles from Fraser where her parents established Miller’s Idlewild Inn near the West Entrance Portal to the Moffat Tunnel, which figures so prominently in the book . After she received her PhD in Renaissance English Literature from Arizona State University, she returned to manage her family’s ski resort as well as own and edit a small newspaper, the Winter Park Manifest. This fusion of Rocky Mountain resident, research scholar, and popular journalist combines to make Doc Susie one of the most readable and authentic biographies that I have encountered in a long time. First, Cornell knows firsthand the flora, fauna, climate, and personalities that make up small mountain communities, so the setting through which she moves her protagonist comes refreshingly alive. In this description, Cornell describes a barn dance. “Carrying baskets of fried chicken and potato salad into the bright interior of the barn she [Doc Susie] admired the clean-scrubbed pine floor, sprinkled with corn meal so the dancers could spin and shuffle even faster than if the floors had been newly waxed. Evergreen boughs and wildflowers were strung between stall braces. At one end, a planked platform for the musicians had been laid over tree stumps. Walking across the crunchy barn floor Doc enjoyed successive waves of smells: fresh pine, hay, rotted manure, neat’s-foot oil used on tack and harnesses, cinnamon cookies, lemonade”(118).

Cornell’s scholarly background taught her admirable research and writing skills, so she is able to weave into her narrative extensive investigation into early railroad history, pioneer doctors and their medical practices, the lumber industry, and the lives of women in early twentieth century along with personal interviews with residents of Fraser, family letters and photographs, and even a diary by Doc Susie herself. The Moffat Tunnel near Fraser played an important role in the town’s history, and nursing the injured as well as serving as Coroner kept her informed of the dangers of the work: “the ‘official’ count of men killed so far, kept by the Denver newspapers, lulled the public into thinking that construction on the project was relatively safe. Only when accidents were spectacular did they excite the interest of the press. Doc Susie knew that the tunnel death toll was, in fact, much higher. . . .Reading in the Denver Post or Rocky Mountain News about serious accidents to workers–accidents almost invariably attributed to ‘their own carelessness’ or ‘unpredicable circumstances’–Susie could not repress a bitter smile” (191) .When Cornell states in her “Author’s Note” that she wound (literally) her way through miles of microfilm of the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post, I felt an immediate kinship because I had researched those same microfilms for almost those same years for my biography of Elinore Pruitt Stewart. Rounding out her credentials is her journalism background, for she made what could have been a dreary, scholarly work into a life story that appeals to a wide audience.

Less a Biography, More a Novel

We haphazardly follow Doc Susie from her arrival in the Colorado timber country (1905) to the end of her life. It reads like fiction, with much detail and reported, verbatim speech which has to be invented by the author. No dates are provided, and as her life progresses we have to guess from minimal clues what year we are in. Early in the story she lectures a young woman on the need for vitamins -- the first vitamin was discovered in 1913 and it looks to me to be an author's invented anachronism. The book DOES give a good picture of the people and times in that location.

Yet ancestral traditions continue to strongly inform their way of life. Their beautifully designed tapa cloth, made from the pounded inner bark of the paper mulberry tree, most vividly connects the past with the present.

Using the various stages of tapa cloth production to frame a broader discussion of changes and continuities in Maisin culture (economic pursuit, social arrangements, gender relations, religion, politics, and the environment) Barker offers a nuanced understanding of how the Maisin came to reject commercial logging on their traditional lands. Viewed in isolation, the decision appears to be a confirmation of tradition over "modernity." Yet the book shows that it is the most recent, and perhaps dramatic, instance in a long chain of improvisations and compromises that have allowed the Maisin to remain true to core ancestral values while participating in wider social, political, and economic systems. Ancestral Lines provides an important counterpoint to the stereotype of indigenous peoples as passive victims of impersonal global forces.

While accessible to most readers, including those with little or no knowledge of Melanesia or anthropology, Ancestral Lines has been designed with introductory anthropology courses in mind. Each chapter opens with a description of succeeding stages in the creation and use of a piece of tapa cloth. These, in turn, lead into discussions of dimensions of Maisin life that correspond to the sections and order of most standard introductory textbooks.

John Barker is a professor of anthropology at the University of British Columbia. Somewhat outdated

Despite the occasionally highly technical nature of the subject matter he discusses, Williamson's oeuvre is among the most insightful, readable and accessible in current philosophy. As such, it should be of value to both students and professionals.

Despite this, "Vagueness" cannot be given an unreserved recommendation. Of its three rather sharply delineated parts, the first, surveying the history of the subject matter, is overlong and only intermittingly of any interest, and the third, presenting his own, epistemic position, far more profoundly developed in "Knowledge and its Limits" (by comparison, the presentation in "Vagueness" seems sketchy and uses a lot of pages to say very little). The middle part, however, discussing semantic approaches to the question of vagueness, is valuable, and his attacks on fuzzy logic and superevaluationist approaches are ingenious (and, in my opinion, decisive).

To conclude, I would recommend anyone interested in the issue to read these chapters (4 and 5, I believe, not having the book in front of me), but urge more general readers to acquire "Knowledge and its Limits" instead. The latter is a stroke of genius - one of the most important contributions to philosophy since 1976. (PS: Hope readers will excuse the somewhat stilted language in t6his review - I am not a native speaker).

The Standard Text on Sorites Problems

If you took grains of sand away from a pile of sand, when would it cease to be a pile? The paradox of the sorites goes back to early Greek philosophers, and recent metaphysicians have revived the debate after a couple thousand years of philosophers ignoring it. According to Timothy Williamson, there is an exact point when every pile ceases to be a pile, and we could never know what that point is. If a man loses a certain number of hairs, he will be bald, and just one hair makes the difference. Williamson's epistemic view of vagueness has now come to occupy the front stage. Everyone wants to show why such a wacky view just can't be right, but no one seems to have a convincing reply to his arguments. His book covers the main views for dealing with problems of vagueness, and it goes through basic reasons deriving just from standard logic, showing why the other views are seriously inadequate unless they revise our standard logic to the point of absurdity. This book isn't easy even for trained philosophers, but it's well worth it for anyone who wants to delve into this fundamental issue in metaphysics and philosophy of language.

John Nagate doesn't know what he's talking about.

Clearly, the previous reviewer, Mr. Nagate, doesn't even understand the problem of vagueness. His explanation of Sorites paradox is that "at some point" after removing grains of sand from a heap, we are unsure whether, if removing another grain of sand, it can still be called "a heap". And after removing some more grains of sand, "at some point", we become sure that it is not a heap.

This simply begs the question, at what point exactly are we "unsure" that it is a heap? It is the same problem -- and remains a problem for most of the meaningful language that we use. To say such things, he seems to understand neither the problem of vagueness nor Wittgenstein.

Timothy Williamson is a fantastic philosopher, and one whom I'm inclined to believe will one day rank with Wittgenstein in the history books (thankfully, he is still alive and productive, and most certainly not "historical"). I sincerely hope that no one will forgo purchasing this book on the basis of that reviewer's "original research" and unorthodox "interpretation" of Wittgenstein. He clearly knows little to nothing of serious philosophy, and clearly lacks the imagination to see why anyone would see vagueness as a legitimate philosophical problem (which greater minds than both he and Wittgenstein have believed -- for a couple thousand years).
