1/3 of the way and I cannot read another page

I do not like writing reviews before I finish a book, but 1/3 the way into this book and I just cannot take anymore.

* Minor Spoilers *
Russ Green and Vivian meet and fall in love. By the end of the first page I was sure I knew where the book was going. I was sure she would die in childbirth and Russ would have to raise their daughter alone. I could not have been more wrong, but I almost wish Mr. Sparks would got back to his old clich�.

Instead the book comes off more like a Taylor Swift break-up song she writes for the sole purpose of revenge. At first Russ and Vivian are a happy newlywed couple. Very quickly their daughter London comes along and they settle into a typical middle class life with her staying home and him going off to his fancy PR job. But when he feels insecure at work he quits his job and starts his own company without getting a single client ready first. He then becomes bitter and feels insecure. Vivian gets a job with Walter Spannerman (read that as Donald Trump) and Russ is resentful. The next 7 chapters are from his point of view as he complains because he has to spend time with his daughter, taking her to her activities and doing household chores like grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, and laundry. As if that is not enough he grumbles because he is not getting enough attention in the bedroom. When the couple does spend time together they bicker and snipe at each other constantly. While reading it I start feeling agitated and cranky too.

If all that is not enough the book is poorly edited. Words are missing and sentences repeat themselves. You can figure out what he was trying to say, but it feels like Mr Sparks is either just not interested in writing anymore, this book was rushed to release, or it was written as a way to get back at his wife after their divorce. I mean no disrespect to either of them, because it is horrible when any marriage ends, but this book is definitely in my top 5 worst books I have ever read

A True Disappointment

What a disappointment. From the first few pages I knew Sparks was writing this as therapy to his own divorce from his wife of so many years. He has lost it as far as I am concerned, and I doubt if I will ever buy another of his books. I always felt he wrote the best love stories of any author I had read, but this one made me feel he was unhappy when he wrote it. It just went on and on and on over the mess of his marriage, with him insisting that Russ was a hero, but rather it looked like he was a door-mat to his aggressive wife. Could have been a good story if the first half of the book had been perhaps 50 pages! Poorly written and edited. Such talent wasted.

sparks last book was worthless enough for me to pass on ever buying his books again, but I thought maybe it was n exception. WRONG! this book was even worse! It may be time to give it up Sparks; or at least get an editorial staff that has more than an 8th grade level of basic grammar. I cringed every time I read each tical error- I usually read through his works with seldom a drop of the boom but I had to take breaks just to literally finish it -- which I did merely in an attempt to see if the next page or chapter would eventually reveal ANY plot or subplot. Nothing but streaming whiny dribble . Last Sparks book for me and I gave up on his movies 2 productions back. Either his ex was the ghost author of his initial works or he's just list the gift and money won out. So sad.

About the Author
William J. Hardcastle is Professor of Speech Sciences and Head of the Department of Speech and Language Sciences at Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh. From 1974 until 1993 he worked in the Department of Linguistic Science at Reading University where he was Professor of Speech Science and Director of Speech Research Laboratory. He has published books and articles in a number of different areas of speech science including the mechanisms of speech production and sensori-motor control in both normal and pathological speech. He is Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics and has been President of the International Association of Clinical Phonetics and Linguistics since 1991.

John Laver is Professor of Phonetics at the University of Edinburgh, where he was Vice-Principal of the University with Special responsibility for research from 1994 to 1997. He was the founding Chairman of the Humanities Research Board of the British Academy from 1994 to 1998, and is Fellow of the British Academy, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Institute of Acoustics. He has held visiting posts at the University of California at Los Angeles, and at Macquarie University, Australia. He was the President of the International Phonetic Association from 1991 to 1995. He has published widely in phonetics, speech science and speech technology, and is the author "The Phonetic Description of Voice Quality" (1980); "The Gift of Speech" (1991); and "Principles of Phonetics "(1994).

Covering the bases in phonetics

I'm a phonetics instructor, and I used this book as a sort of personal in-service training course during a break between semesters. I have been through many similar books, so much of the material was familiar, but there was also a great deal that was fresh and new for me. The book touches on some acoustic, auditory and physiological issues, but its main thrust is articulatory phonetics. It includes many excellent line drawings of the vocal tract.
The book gets off to something of a slow start, since there is a lot of background material somewhat peripheral to phonetics itself in the first three chapters, comprising part I. The main topics covered are semiotics, the different levels of speech production, and accent and dialect. It is all useful, but it left me anxious to get to the meat of the book.
Laver's use of Pike's 'contoid' and 'vocoid' categories sounded a bit sci-fi to me, but it's good to see familiar concepts analyzed in a somewhat different way. Laver will often spend time citing examples of unusual sounds, e.g. linguo-labials, where other books either omit or gloss over them quickly. The index of languages (Appendix II), is very helpful in putting into context some of the more exotic languages the examples come from. I especially appreciated the section on pulmonic ingressives (p. 168-170) since I had observed examples of these myself in northern German. I hadn't heard about their use in the Formosan language Tsou before, though I live in Taiwan.
Coarticulatory phenomena receive quite thorough treatment. The book also features a substantial section on prosody, an area that some other works tend to be weak in, and included in-depth examinations and discussions of duration, pitch, loudness, stress, and rate of speech.
The content, organization, and writing of this book are impeccable, and always clear. The only one slight drawback I found is the book's rigorous academic style, which is mainly a strength, but it can make for rather dry reading. Chapter 8, 'Stop articulations', and chapter 13, 'Intersegmental co-ordination' were longer than the other chapters, and dragged a bit for me.
Overall, I recommend this book highly as part of the canon every aspiring phonetician should cover, though I wouldn't choose this as a first work to read in phonetics - Ladefoged goes down more easily, in my view. _Principles_ is, however, a very rich and definitely worthwhile reference to have in your personal linguistics library.

About the Author

Eugene L. Chiappetta is a professor of science education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University

of Houston. Dr. Chiappetta holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Allegheny College and master’s degree in General

Science, and a Ph.D. in Science Education from Syracuse University. He has coauthored many textbook analysis research

studies, using the nature of science as a framework. Recently, a recipient of the National Association for Research in Science

A perfect science methods book

This is the ideal science methods text. It offers a solid theoretical background and clearly illustrates the practical applications of this theory. The advice about classroom management is sound, sober, and realistic. I am delighted that the authors spend an entire chapter on often neglected topics (in other science methods texts) such as professional development and the history of reform in science education. This text is current, smart, engaging, and informed.

Kindle Version is Unsupported on Kindle

(This review is for the KINDLE version of the textbook, not the actual content of the textbook)

It's not amazon's fault that this product is unsatisfactory. I bought the Kindle version of this book and if works on almost everything EXCEPT a Kindle. This is because the publisher chose for it to work only on iPhones, iPads, Android Phones/Tablets, and the computer. However, in regards to the computer, it doesn't even work for the Windows 8 app that is already installed on the computer when I bought it. I would have had to install a different Kindle app that was compatible with the book.

So, before you decide to buy the Kindle version, make sure you have a different device to use it. I simply chose to get my money refunded and buy the physical copy. Reading off a computer screen is damaging to one's eyes, so I was trying to avoid that (and avoid carrying around the actual book), but it looks like I'll have to buy the book regardless.

The Literary Warrior

I agree with the previous reviewer that the editing could be improved, but what publisher these days bothers to treat its authors and their readers properly? This generations Maxwell Perkinses are busy schmoozing new authors, not perfecting the works of the writers they already have.

That said, this book is very valuable, discussing how writers can capture the personalities of warriors, heroes, victims, survivors and villains other participants in warfare. He devotes a chapter to each of the types of participants listed above and within each chapter, five or six subchapters each devoted to a single character from literature, from Homer's Achilles to Fraser's Flashman, using each character to highlight aspects of the subject. He manages to cram a lot of information and insight into a very readable book. There are characters (and maybe even categories) one misses - I would have loved to read the author's views on Colonel Nichols from James Gould Cozzens' Guard of Honor, but he was a moral hero more than a physical one, so I don't know where Mr. Coker would have placed him.

Mr. Coker's judgments are, to my mind, sound, even where I don't agree with him. There is only one point on which I strongly disagree. Like me, Mr. Coker doesn't think Catch-22 is great literature, although he subscribes to the anti-war message of the book, which makes him a little more tolerant of the World War II setting of an anti-war novel. There is a particular character in Catch-22 whom I find to be particularly disturbing, an old Italian peasant who argues with Nately about the senselessness of war. He tells Nately (with Yossarian looking on) that it doesn't matter who wins wars, that he was sitting on his doorstep when the Germans moved in and that he was sitting on his doorstep when they moved out. Like all critics who want to like the book, Mr.Coker calls the peasant "cynical," but that is not how the character is written at all. He is the moral center of the book. Nately argues until he is blue in the face and the peasant gets the best of him. If the peasant had merely pointed out that he was not Jewish and therefore was not hauled away by the Nazis to a death camp, then he would obviously appear to the reader as cynical and Catch-22 might have been more compelling than propaganda for high school freshmen. When Joseph Heller failed to make that point about the necessity of war, his book became morally repugnant.

Don't let that cavil put you off this book, however. It has some thoughtful things to say about war and also introduces or reintroduces the reader to a number of great works of literature.

Good but leaves out a lot.

This is a concise version of the full "Cellular and Molecular Immunology" by the same author. I read this book cover to cover as a MS-1. Now a MS-2 preparing for step1, I feel that, while the pictures are good and you can go through it very quickly (just over 200 pages),the book leaves out a lot of important information that are essential in understanding the mechanisms of immune responses and their application to specific diseases. After I finish a chapter, I often feel I just get fed hard, general facts without understanding the "WHY".

In comparison, the full book this book is based on, the "Cellular and Molecular Immunology," though much bigger (~600 pages), it offers much clearer explanation of how and why an immune response work a certain way. In the end I got a lot more out of the bigger book than this one. If I had a second chance, I'd spend more time and about 10 bucks more and just get the bigger book the first time around.

Immunology Made Easy

This book is excellent for getting the "big picture" when it comes to learning immunology. It has great illustrations with concise explanations to boot. I would recommend this to anyone learning immunology for the first time and as a supplemental text for anyone in the medical sciences.

Easy Read

I'm a first year medical student and this was the required text for class. I also bought Levinson's Review of Micro, which many students use for the Immunology section (and question bank). I thought the Abbas was much easier to read, and presented things in a very logical fashion. The chapters on T cell and B cell response are split up according to recognition and effector response, which I thought was a little unnecessary. They also repeat material each chapter, so you could technically read it out of order and still get the concepts. I like this, because it exposed me to certain key ideas over and over again, making them easier to remember. I prefer this text over Levinson, which I tried to read a few days before our exam, but only lead to confusion. This text has a lot of pictures, which makes chapters a lot shorter in terms of wording, and I also like this.
